Pulling tcase (1 Viewer)

Man the center diff assembly is a bear to get off, I’ve got a 20-ton press and it’s not budging an inch. Any pointers here?

What is a VC?
Viscous Coupler. It's a limited slip device for the drive shafts. When it seizes, the transfer case is like locked permanently-or until you remove or replace the VC. It can't be repaired, so most folks make a note to pull it out if they're ever in the transfer case. Heat is it's enemy and it gets really hot if you're wheelin' and don't lock the CDL. Most folks don't even know it's there until it fails and they start squeeling tires going around corners. It was supposed to be an upgrade and if it's healthy, it helps on slick roads, usually at highway speeds where locking the CDL might not be the best idea for maintaining control of your rig. There's threads here on mud on how to remove it. Being as you're into the transfer case already, this would be the perfect time to do it. I'd do it if I was into mine.

Oh good to know! I’ll look it up and take it off. Sounds similar to the LSPV, safety feature that probably worked pretty good 20 years ago but nowadays is mostly a liability. In any case it’s moot until I can figure how to get this gear stack apart :doh:
 
Got the bugger! Still took some muscle but thanks to 3eyebandit for the tip. Cracked the white plastic over the top connection but other than that seems good. Now comes the fun part.

According to the FSM you are taking too many parts off all at once. Start at the top and remove them one at time off the shaft, that could be why its taking so much force.

I'll assume you've pulled the snap ring.
There's a stright pin that's slipped in down near that bull gear somewhere in the stack and you may be trying to pull that gear off through the pin.

There's a stright pin that's slipped in down near that bull gear somewhere in the stack and you may be trying to pull that gear off through the pin.

I’ll give that a go, sometimes I neglect the FSM for YouTube, damn millennial etc. etc.

I did pull the snap ring, will do a double check for the second pin and post results after I try again later today, thanks!
 
While you have the case apart, I'd lose the VC, just so you don't have it seize up on you down the road. Living in LA, you have little, if any, need for the advantages of a healthy VC. JMHO.
We toss all of the VCs in the bin.
 
I'm surprised 20 tons isn't moving anything. Snap ring removed? Start by trying to remove the front output piece, then work you way down.

If using a puller put a bunch of pressure on it, then give the hex portion of the pull some extra love with a hammer. A couple violent smacks then a little more force and repeat. At some point it should let go with a good bang and parts moving.

If using a press, lots of pressure and some less violent taps on the front output through an aluminum or brass drift/bar/block. Similar results should entail. Make sure to protect you important bits.

Same issue with this last piece. As you can see the pin shouldn’t be holding anything up.

Blowtorch maybe? Heat the shaft while I’m pulling?
you can carefully heat it, its going to get stinky af inside your house/apartment whatever you are in. can you not make it budge with good rachet and socket? put an adjustable wrench on the pulling arm to help give you leverage. I've never had to much trouble using that method.

I was thinking ratchet too but I’ve got no way of securely holding the rest of the assembly while I crank on it.
 
Did you try putting pressure then shocking it with a couple hammer hits?

Freezing or heating will have very little effect since they will be heated or cooled together.
