Good stuff, @StaleAle . Let me add this: I watched the previous owner of my 3x locked green 80 take it places on 33's with no sliders that I am only now starting to successfully go with 35's and sliders (and sometimes still wonder HTF it happened), and the limiting factor wasn't fear of damage...honestly, it was lack of driver skill. There's no magic bullet unless maybe you're driving Bigfoot. Having the best spotter in the world doesn't guarantee success and won't save you from damage until you have the experience to combine your ability with their information.

Get a winch because (in no particular order):
1. You want to go places you're not capable of driving through
2. You don't want to hold up the group if you can't find a good line
3. Your junk is likely to break something at the worst possible time
4. You go places where everyone is likely to need the ability to help the person in front or behind them
5. You bought a 'heavy' lift when you only needed 'medium'
6. You have stumps to pull out of your yard

Unless you're willing to accept body damage (sheet metal and glass, not scratched armor) then you're really only overlanding (which can still be challenging), and that's not usually done on blacks. That makes sense to me having not gone to bed yet at 5:00am; others might disagree.

Back to tooting the 80 bandwagon horn - my opinion is that it will be far better on trails with 33's than a GX on 35's as well as a better daily given the same. Far less expensive, too.

That might just be the Holiday Inn patron in me speaking. Not sure at this point.

 If you're talking leaving gearing stock then maybe but if you regear for 35s like the vast majority of GX owners do then I think that outweighs any downsides. Vastly newer tech and a far more modern interior layout not to mention the GX being quieter, more comfortable riding, and having far more power. No question offroad 80 is better but on road, the GX is king between those 2.

I like this discussion though. I hope to see you at some events @PRADO3

Since I finally slept for a couple hours, I might be thinking that my statement wasn't necessarily fully thought out. :D Maybe @landwagon will allow me the experience of driving his GX next time we cross paths. Pretty sure it's now built as you just described.

.."regear like the vast majority of GX owners..."?! The high cost of regearing makes that highly unlikely. Just my humble opinion.

@PRADO3 get them to knock $2k off and buy this before I do and my wife kills me. If the undercarriage checks out someone will probably pay full ask given the maintenance and ownership history even with those miles.

It’s so good... the year and color is great. Mileage is pretty high but yeah- Nice truck pending undercarriage inspection.

Glad I didn’t sell or donate my 80, it’s my designated beater at the moment. My Hzj73 has some charging issues and I hope it’s something simple as changing the voltage regulator. I think The 2 batteries weren’t equally charged, thus making the alternator work harder? I don’t know?... I’m researching and trying to figure it out. Next step is installing 2 new batteries, a new voltage regulator, and brushes and see what happens. I forgot how smooth the 80 drives; Even with all The rust:cautious:. I sold the front bumper/winch and sliders, took the bumper swing outs off so I can haul plywood. The rear pan hard mount on the 80’s axle is Ugly:alien: but secure and if time permits, I will weld a new one on.

Why were they off in the first place? 😂

Finished up installing the new to me low-ish mile 80 series box after @OTRAMM helped knock of the pitman arms Wednesday afternoon.

Huuuuge improvement in on center feel and lack of play. The adjustment nut on my old box was rusted on so never got to take out any slack then it puked gear oil everywhere anyway.

Dropped straight in with only one minor mod which is to notch the u joint shield a bit. I still need to do that and adjust the wheel as it’s off center about 1-2 inches.

I paid extremely close attention to lining things up and the relay rod dropped right into the pitman arm. I’m guessing the play in the wheel on the previous box when used as a reference point might have caused it. Think I can just disconnect and move the collar where the shaft goes into the box over 1 tooth.

Who wants a nice frothy ATF/power steering flush daiquiri 😂

Yikes!

You guys got any tips on getting a stuck diff out of the axle housing? I had this diff out a couple years ago and used “The Right Stuff” as sealent when putting it back in. Now I can’t get a screw driver or anything in between the diff and the housing to pry it off. Thing is stuck on good.

I have the whole axle out and on a work bench. Tried various dead blows etc but it’s not budging. Still in the ginger phase and haven’t gone to gorilla mode yet. Figured I’d ask for tips first....

I do have a 12 ton press that I could potentially employ....

@afgman786 just did this so you might ask him what he used.

I tried ginger and quickly went to gorilla mode with a chisel and hammer. Just chiselled away at one spot until I could get enough leverage in there. Then shoved a flathead in to open it up a bit more and just worked my way around.
Chipped one of Bob's chisel in the process
