Working on cleaning a frame today. What looked like a rusted frame is now clean and proper. You can see where I stopped and the unclean/treated section toward the front.

Process.

Pressure wash.
Air Hose to remove all the inner frame dirt
Pressure wash.
Zepp Orange and a scrub brush
Dry
Rust Converter

Paint Optional. Likely won’t paint since the stock paint is so good under all this grime.

Once the project is done I’ll send it home with a nice Fluid Film coat

What have you guys found effective for removing undercoating, most likely put on by previous owner with rattle can? It’s sprayed all over fender wells. I started to scrap but scratched paint. Going to try heat gun next but will take any other tips

Someone should be able to comment with some type of solvent to use that will soften it up then hit it with pressure washer.

I bought this super original '69 FJ45 from Australia 5 years ago and have been working on it off and on since then. Turned out the engine was full of rusty sludge so, despite the "assistance" of a vacationing maniac from California, it wasn't going anywhere, until recently when a pro took over, removed the head and cleaned out the sludge. (He was no cruiser expert but recognised it as a slightly modified GMC motor from WW2).

Anyway, thought it was time to re read this thread and get to work on the body. So far its just had the CLR treatment but I'm amazed at the difference. I was too nervous to use green scotchbrite as the paint is still fairly good but had some grey, which seems to work perfectly. The trayback was less important (and more rusty) so went for red pads on that and the results speak for themselves.

@Snowbound Looks great, im sure others will comment but I think you are ready to hit it with the Griots treatment next.
Thanks. Still a bit to do with the CLR. One bottle wasn't enough.. 2 more ordered.

Also would like to get the frame protected too.

I have a 2 stage compound by Farecla ( G3 & G10) , so will use that followed by a wax on the body. Tray will probably get the Penetrol treatment.
 
What are thoughts around bare metal in places where factory paint has chipped off?

Can we work with that?

I usually chip the flakes back to where they won’t go any further then Penetrol on the bare metal areas probably if you have good paint
 
This is my 1973 named Tina… I would love to do something cool with this paint job, the original color is the beige, and it is starting to come out from underneath the old red.

I would love some direction here!

I usually chip the flakes back to where they won’t go any further then Penetrol on the bare metal areas probably if you have good paint
