Power steering install issues on my 1978 FJ40 (1 Viewer)

I've exhausted all possibilities of correcting the alignment issue unless I find another PS pump with a longer shaft. I've removed the PS pump, brackets, etc. from my 40, this has been a complete waste of money and time.

As of this moment I don't know how I will proceed, maybe Georg refuses to accept the fact that this is a pump issue.

Hey Mike.
I'm not sure if you still feel this way about your project.
But I'll tell you a couple of things:
1) I've been working on cruisers since 1987 and bought my first one in 1991. I've owned them ever since and started working on them full time ten years ago. I still learn something new everyday and hope to continue to do so. Otherwise I might as well quit.
2) it is absolutely not a FACT that I sent you the wrong PS pump. Not sure where that idea came from but it's just simply not true.

I hope the pulley is the last piece in your ps conversion puzzle. Best of luck with the rest of your project.
I'll be happy to continue to chime in if you need more help or input.

Mike - Great to hear that you have found your issue.

FWIW - My $0.02 worth, take a look at Danny's, Erik's, and your upper radiator hose. I would suggest to get the same one as Danny's because it places the downward bend further away from the radiator, thus further away from the Crank/PS/Alt belt. Here have a look at all three below.
Erik's: (seems to be possibly installed backwards? But apparently works.)

Thanks GAA I will be looking into hose options. I appreciate your valuable input!!

Mike look back a few posts, I sent my three hose part numbers - I don't know which is the top one, but should be easy to figure out - just call @beno (Onur)

Thanks Danny, I noted those part numbers and will definitely come in handy in the near future as my project continues to evolve. It was a mistake on my part purchasing after market hoses for my 40, not happy with the way mine look.

This is the one you are referencing: 16571-61040 :D

Georg,

At the time of my statements I was not sure if it was the pump shaft or the pulley which contributed to the belt misalignment and hose interference issue. Now we all know it was the pulley, pending installation. By the way all the statements made on this board by me were true to the best of my knowledge and belief at the time of the problem and all information available at hand.

Anyway, As such I have absolutely no ill feelings towards you or my project and I'd appreciate your continued input. Thank you for the great customer service and support!" and hope to continue working with you on future projects.

Thanks again,
Mike

You're welcome Mike!

Glad we have an answer. And according to USPS you should be able to know for sure next Tuesday.

I'd highly recommend you get the OEM hoses. Onur aka "beno" on here is your man for new OEM Toyota parts.

I just removed the set of aftermarket radiator hoses from a customer's 76 fj40. They were cracked and almost ready to rupture .

That is the kind of service that is a rarity these days. Although it has been several years since I've purchased anything from Georg I wouldn't hesitate after seeing this.

Thanks Don!!!

I made a mistake and sent Mike the wrong pulley..........you have to make good on your promises and stand behind your word.

As long as it all works out in the end, everybody happy!!!!

Sorry to hijack -

So , the hose number 16571-61040 fits the '81+ model thermostat housing ? Due to rust in the block and not wanting to ruin a new radiator , I use a Gano filter in the top hose - that longer top section hose looks like it would work better than the fubar one I had to make up to get it all to fit .

I need to fix this quick install but cannot find a factory hose long enough to install my filter setup neatly . Made this mess with two aftermarket hoses cut up ....ugly . Be nice if the later model thermostat housing/hose would make this a cleaner install and clear the power steering pump planned for this summer .

You don't have an engine oil cooler on there so you'd have to plug that port off if you plan on running the late thermostat housing.

Georg @ Valley Hybrids

So , that is the correct hose number for the late model housing ?
I'll have to find a housing , of course or pony up for a new one , but I assume it will bolt up to my lower housing and use the same factory thermostat , correct ?

Not worried about the extra outlet , I can either plug it or cut it off and weld it - no issue there .

Sarge, I posted, back a few pages, the three hoses I bought from cDan for my '78 FJ40 - I don't recall which is which, but @GA Architect say's 61040 is the top hose and it certainly looks like it. Call Onur.

For my '77 FJ40, here are the four radiator hoses I have.

16571-61040 - Radiator inlet (upper hose - 8/76 to 1/79 )
16571-61050 - Radiator outlet (lower, radiator side hose - 8/76 to 7/80)
190916-01056 - Radiator outlet (lower, pump side hose - 3/69 to 7/80)
16261-60011 - Water pump by-pass (3/69 to 7/80)

Here there all are:

I would try the hose from a 82 fj40, it may be the hose and/or the t-stat housing

I would ditch th PS cooler tube and just use a small tranny type cooler(did this is my 82). The OEM PS cooler is like the tube..and it goes under the rad.I used Jim C's smog pump kit on my fj60,going to get one for the 82 fj40 as it just make its easier to work down there.

Can you use a shorter belt for blue and run ALT-WP-CR and remove the Air Pump and run green WP-CR-PS? May need a different belt for green.

I think that would allow you to miss the rad hose and you would likely no longer need the air-pump as an idler pulley.

You would also have WP covered with both belts - if one belt fails, WP still works.

not sure if this pic helps, but 82 fj40, added OEM PS, fj60 pump/bracket, OEM PS box, used the OEM belt that for a 82 with OEM PS
