I think my favorite day of the week definitely has to be new bike day.

I really loved my first gen smuggler-still would like to get a newer one. Such a sweet ride.
First ride was great but it's going to take a bit to get used to it. Other than a couple rides a year on my wife's Tallboy 3, my primary mountain bike is a single speed Ti hardtail. Not much overlap in the Venn diagram between the SS and the Smuggler.

Hey Jim:

Off the shelf RockShock probably. It's going to be suspension. I'm middle-aged. I want comfort.
I forget shocks exist because I love old rigid ATB/MTBs so much haha!

Radon Swoop Enduro (2015)

Didn't use it that much the first 10 years, mainly for occasional downhill. More frequently now being more active and since its easy to just throw into the back of the Cruiser :) Recently replaced the brakes (SRAM -> Shimano) as they were toast despite the low mileage. Hopefully the japanese tech will hold up better.

Back on my bvll****…

My partner and I want to do some light bikepacking. I already have that 84 Trek ATB that could be kitted out nicely for dirt roads, but she didn’t have anything. So I’ve been watching Martkeplace, which I’m always looking at anyway…

1984 Miyata Terra Runner. Miyata-made plain gauge CroMo tubing and mostly original components, including the cool bullmoose stem. She wanted a rigid ATB like my Trek, and one of the main criteria was a lugged fork crown because we both think it looks way better than a unicrown fork. Silly, I know, but whatever.

Anyway, this thing is long and slack and really comfortable to ride. There will be some mods soon: Brooks B17, new stem and swept back bars, early Suntour thumbies, new tires, etc. updates to follow.

Your partner looks bored in the picture, and her paws are going to need a different kind of handlebar grips. Did she alert her fork crown preference with a bark or a pointer-stance?

j/k. Looks like you're going to be having some fun adventuring on some sweet classics

I sold this bike last spring, and had not thought about a bike since. Slow day in the office Friday and I typed "Surly" into the FB marketplace search and there she was for sale again. Had to be fate, so I bought it back. Did 2 rides over the weekend each with 700ft of vertical climb in 3 miles after almost 2 years off of a bike and I surprisingly feel great - my hydration & supplement regimen must actually be working and not a total waste of money. I forgot how much I enjoy the exercise of riding, hopefully I can keep some consistency.

Definitely need to look into some lower rolling resistance tires, these Minion DHF's make the bike feel like a brake is dragging. Probably end up with a 29" setup but need to do some research as to what will fit.

Can't quite read it, is that a karate monkey?
Yes. It was between a Krampus and KM, and I picked this one up as a new build in 2021.

Picked up this old Fuji road bike from a friends property that was among a pile a scrap metal. Heading for the trash. So I figure I take it home and give it a new life.
Here it is. Before and after.

Old school Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra for me!
Settled on that after building up an old Colnago, an Allan Record Carbonio and a 1972 Mercian.
Used to be a hobby….build, ride for a season or two then sell.
The Merckx rode so well it became the permanent ride.

what do you ride? I’ve found for me the best set up is a super grippy front (when the front loses traction it is a bad day…) and faster rolling rear.

Also I can’t recommend specialized tires enough. They perform amazing and if you watch sales can get them for half price of most other major brands. I got four (two 29 and two- 27.5) front tires and four 27.5 rear tires new this past fall for $280 total. I have 3 of the 8 still in the box for next summer. On most of our bikes, we go through a front tire, every summer and a rear tire every one to two summers, we ride a lot.

My go to for the last 4 years on all the families bikes is specialized Butcher T9 front and specialized purgatory T5 or T7 rear. On everything but my daughter’s DH bike where she runs the butcher T9 front and eliminator T9 rear.
