Have to disagree here. With this app (AppRadio Unchained Reloaded - Android Apps on Google Play) you can have your phone screen right there on the dash with full touch capability. Had my Appradio 2 since like 2012 and she is still going strong. I have a phone permanently hooked to it in the car. Best part is the phone links into the radio's GPS antenna so all offline nav apps work great. I suppose that's a little over and above standard use but you can't beat it with a stick.

I got a Pioneer AVH-X4800 primarily because it supported the AppRadio functionality. Then I tried using either the "official" Appradio app, as well as the Unchained version of it, but I couldn't get either to connect and work properly. It might be due to the fact that my phone is unlocked and rooted, and running an unofficial build of Cyanogenmod that's given me some problems, especially with bluetooth. One of these days I might dig into it further.

iPad mini dash, about to replace with a new one that moves the iPad up so I can keep the ashtray/charging port.

I have a Pioneer:
Pioneer FH-X720BT 2-DIN CD Receiver with Mixtrax and Bluetooth (Discontinued by Manufacturer) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MRL30N4/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_x.NbybHVF9WBD

Works well, we have BT set up for both my wife's iPhone and my Galaxy. The call/microphone features dont work well, but that could be largel due to a noisy cab....

Do you have a picture of it installed? I was looking at those type of head units on crutchfield but was thinking they would look too intrusive in the 80 dash.

That is pretty cool, is there an actual radio somewhere in that dash too? Curious how you did that!

Also love those Yeti cups!

Pioneer AVH X4800S. Although, I've been an Alpine guy most of my life, I really like this head unit. Easy install, fairly easy to navigate, and DVDs for my munchkin keeps us all happy.

That looks great. Are the little plus and minus buttons the volume control? If so, are they easy enough to use or hard to get used to? Audio streaming work consistently?

There is no radio in place. But I'm considering installing one on the next go around.

Current system consists of:

iPad Mini > Connects to Airport Express via wifi (to keep uncompressed data)
Airport Express > Digital processor via optical audio cable
Digital Processor to amps (front/rear and sub amps)
amps to speakers.

This was done to try to maximize sound quality but the airport express has been a pain in the ass. If you pause for too long it looses connection, every time you start the car you have to connect so it's not ideal.

There is plenty of room to install a single din head unit and connect to it via USB. This is what I plan on doing when new dash is done. It should allow for connection as soon as vehicle is turned on, pause music when vehicle is turned off and it will be much cheaper than the other system. I use a bluetooth steering wheel control which controls the ipad functions, track change and volume and I plan on keepign that.

Thanks,

Scott

The bootup is ~ 30 sec but I have it set to wait 2 hours before shutting down to eliminate the bootup time when making short stops. The backup camera switches on instantly, even if booting up. I didn't root but have Torque, waze and many other apps installed. The GPS that came with it works good. It is nice having 2 usb ports as well as 2 micro SD front slots. It says up to 32gb but I am running a 64g no problem. I also installed a USB SDR dongle and can use it as a radio scanner.
What's a SDR dongle

I believe it's Software Defined Radio, which is pretty neat. It allows you to control frequency, etc through software. I think it's neat, but depending on your use, the FCC may not.

Yes, software defined radio. It is receive only so no issues with FCC. I can monitor CB channels, am/fm broadcast as well as UHF/VHF ham bands.

Listening to a local FM station.

Yeah, the volume controls are the + - buttons. I would have preferred a knob, but it really doesn't bother me at all, actually. Bluetooth streaming has been flawless with an iPhone 6 and I can also plug it into the supplied USB and charge while it plays. Not bad for $260.00.

Where did you wire the usb port to? Was it difficult? One of my concerns about a lot of these head units are the rear mounted usb's and how to wire it somewhere, be it the dash or console.

if i could do it again, I would go to a higher quality single din with a Knob, like a volume knob.

I thought I wanted a double din, it helps to make the dash appear more "modern" but I'm not overly impressed with the look and feel.
The knob is handy to pretend I'm dj-ing again.

I had the JVC KDX 80BT, it was alright. I didn't like the single DIN layout and I was underwhelmed with its lack of ability to fine tune components.

So I've switched to the Alpine CDE W265BT. Its a great double DIN unit, nothing too fancy but it allows for SO much more adjustment of components than my JVC ever did. The sound quality was an immediate improvement. I wish it had a higher definition screen (the 8-bit look is a bit retro) but other than that its got a ton of features. I can even pause or save radio / sat radio and play it back later.

I'll get a photo soon.... it looks like an aftermarket radio.... but not in a great or bad way. The lights I've chosen are for my wife, but it claims basically any color to.match the stock configuration...
Which could change the look I guess
