Editing has always been usergroup limited...members have used the Report Post button many times to request personal information be removed.

I just found a series of posts that made me understand why they are doing this. I still don't like it but I understand why they are doing it now.

That said, It appeas that Mods are not immune to the issue.

Edit: looking at the page in question again it looks like it was a image hosting issue I was looking at. The hosted images on a page all got replaced by a political statement. very odd.

These issues are all part of owning and moderating a forum. Users expect a certain amount of control over their posts as mentioned and it's unfortunate that editorial policy would limit this basic function. I understand there may have been some technical issues but after those are resolved editing should be restored. If spam is a concern, vet users at 100 posts (pick a number) and move on.

There are work arounds by simply linking information off site that can be updated but that takes some value away from MUD.

Hey Woody

I maintain the 'Cruiser Mechanics - Listed by State' thread in the Sticky section on the 60's forum.
I get emails, PM's and posts of new mechanics or shops wanting to add them to the list.
Now that I cant edit my original post, how can I go about doing this.

PM me or post up what you find out
Thanks
Dan

This is going to be extremely frustrating.

Woody can you maybe give starred members our edit power back? Still blocks the spammers and probably greatly reduces the disgruntled members problem.

There are many times when I've edited to remove private information that I posted by accident, or to fix an image or link that stopped working in a tech thread.

Excellent idea!!!

I have always really liked the edit feature. It lets me go back and fix or expand on items that I’ve written about. I hope you can find a fix to bring this feature back. I know if I can’t go back to edit ideas and thoughts I will be less likely to post up.

I couldn't say it better.

'switched on' First Post Editing for:

Vendor Marketplace
Clothing Corner
Merchandise Storefront
Parting Out
Vehicles/Trailers For Sale/Wanted

Those sections are the ones that most benefit from having it active...will continue to monitor over the next few weeks and explore more at the end of February.

Woody,

Can you add 'For Sale - Parts' to that list?

so if you edit, how would we know?

we don't...until you post up a NEW reply to bump the thread up...

BUMP! I edited my post 8 pages back, and want you to re-read it there rather than read it here where the new reply feature has already sent you

I fix/expand with a new reply....makes far more sense and helps keep your train of thought going...otherwise, someone may reply/quote something in your original post, and now it's messed/mixed up in the reply/quote series.

I usually do both (specifically for "how-to" or faq type threads). I edit the original post, so all pertinent info is in one concise post. But I also add a new post mentioning what I added/changed/removed. That way if someone comes along 2 or 3 years later they don't have to read 15 pages of posts with updates interspersed throughout. I think editing is actually an integral part to a good tech section on the forum, and hope there will be a way to re-enable it.

Sadly, adding the 'what was edited/changed' portion is rare for most.

I'm getting far too may PM's and emails and such...I'm exhausted from 8 days on the KOH dusty lakebed taking over 3000 event photos...home in another 1800+ miles, will have time and focus to further review the options and how to best address.

The removed posts are what irritate me...I know of a couple great build threads that are gone. Gone.

I can see the problem with deleted build threads, that really sucks. I don't know if this is possible, or how labor intensive it would be, but have all edited posts (older than, say... 30 days) be sent or put into a queu, to be approved by a mod before being published.

hmmm...will look and see what's avail for that stuff....

I've been reviewing other motorsports forums I'm on...seems 'no editing' is common for NON-motorsports stuff, but not so much otherwise...

1800 miles of thinking coming up, starting tomorrow...Tuesday is a 'catch up at home' day (and Valentines), so Wed will be a major research/options day.

Did a bunch of research on other forums I've got a membership on, many I was on years ago.

Seems the non-motorsports forums have edit limits...or, none that I checked with my old posts allowed me to make edits.

Only one motorsports forum had an edit limit, all the others allowed open editing, even back 5-6 years.

So, editing is now back...I DO have full edit histories enabled, so any changes made can be reviewed if necessary.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled posting.

A happy Mudder

Thanks Woody, I appreciate that.
