Also nearby in Southern Colorado is the Platoro area that @Lifelong40Fan has mentioned, which is not far north of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, owned jointly by Colorado and New Mexico. There are FS roads that head south from the highway between Chama and Antonito that take you to the railroad tracks out in the boondocks. Probably some good dispersed camping in the area also.

I could certainly help with some advance planning w.r.t. potential camping spots and trails. Some of the areas are on the list of places my wife and I want to check out further anyway. And there are some roads we drove on 20 to 25 years ago that we wanted to see if they were still drivable.

The interactive map (routes superimposed on aerial photographs) on the Great Continental Divide Ride website is a great resource. The trails traverse a lot of the areas in Colorado and New Mexico that I've mentioned. Check it out here:

Incorporating part of the Continental Divide into PP2022 would be epicšŸ˜ƒšŸ‘šŸ‘

Thank you!

I was just wondering if we could do some base camping or if it would require a new camp site every day...
Some of the further south areas worth checking out would take 3 to 4 days, so definitely a base camp there. Same with further north in Southern Colorado. So maybe one base camp move.

Down south: Bandelier National Monument, Valles Caldera National Preserve, north flanks of the Jemez Mountains, etc.

Up north: Conejos River/Platoro Reservoir, Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, Great Sand Dunes National Park/Medano Pass, etc.

In between: Rio Grande Gorge/Taos, Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, Cruces Basin Wilderness, etc.

Nearby (on the way or way back): Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde, Santa Fe/Caja del Rio, Bisti Badlands, Classic Cruisers (Poncha Springs just west of Salida), Valle Vidal, etc.

Right now we're planning to take part in Rising Sun's annual Train Run chasing the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad the weekend before Father's Day. Haven't done that before but note they base camp near Sublette, NM, right on the NM border with Colorado. That will familiarize us with at least some of the area. If the group chooses the Father's Day weekend suggested by at least three past Pig Party attendees (Hank Tank, Megadoomer and yours truly) we'll likely just stay in the area between the weekends and do a little more exploration.
Lots of blacktop between all those areas mentioned in the above post. Those coming from the east should certainly consider Medano Pass between Westcliffe CO and the Great Sand Dunes either coming or going. Also a stop at Classic Cruisers in Poncha Springs along U.S. 50, where there are 20+ Pigs in the yard. Bandelier, Valle Caldera etc. are in the Santa Fe/Albuquerque area if coming from the south. A day riding the train before, after or during the PP would also be an opportunity. See post #144 in this thread.
Are we decided on northern NM/southern CO and Father's Day weekend?

This is going to really hurt my feelings to miss out on if my family and I are going to be in Europe for 3 weeks. :frown::frown::bang::censor:
All in my backyard.

Medano Pass and Classic Cruisers are two of the traditional stops for the Texas contingent on their way to the annual Solid Axle Summit. On the way to SAS #1 I led the Texas contingent into the Silverton/Ouray area via Stoney Pass, at the headwaters of the Rio Grande. Those relatively obscure passes can be a good way to get to your destination and avoid pavement at the same time. Medano Pass can also be easily approached from Walsenburg on I-25.

You're right, there aren't a lot of North-South dirt/gravel back roads between the two areas. But that doesn't mean there is pavement everywhere. Once you cross the street from my house you only have to cross 5 paved roads on the way to Aspen, Colorado, 220 miles north.

I've had my sniper install get me up and over Monarch Pass with no issues. I haven't tried it at any higher elevation...yet.
We did Monarch pass on way to Rico! Had trouble a few miles in, kinda like Vapor lock! Tried moving 3 different times no luck! Would idle and run but not move! Told @remy1974 to put it in 1st until it COUGHED and FARTED ran fine after that! šŸ¤”šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‰šŸ˜˜ā¤

BTW, Father's Day would be a tough date for me. But so far, July is wiiiiiide open. I wouldn't mind spending Independence Day with you guys. I have some left over sparklers I can bring.

For those inclined to go to a PP in northern NM/southern CO, can you please reply with preferred and unable to attend dates?

I’ll start.
Preferred: mid June
Unable to attend dates: none, except a late party in August

My preference is the dates we have been using all along, the weekend after Father's Day, before the 4th.

It is close to the Solstice, it doesn't conflict w/ typical family holidays, the kids are out of school, and it gives a chance for some camp sites to open up if snow is a potential issue. It also spares us the heat that comes along in July and August.

If you get into July, you have the Black Hills Cruiser Classic, and then in early Aug you have the solid axle summit, usually before school starts.

If that weekend no longer works for the Knights, then we could just go to a model of holding the Pig Party in a new location and new dates every year, and then see who can show up.

My plans for Father's Day are to be home w/ mother and child.

I am good for Farther's day weekend. Probably would be one of the better father's day but I know a lot of the group isn't down. So I would do anything between 6/16-6/30. My wife wasn't hot about being alone on the 4th. Then probably 7/5-7/13. Too much later and it butts up against my Hawaii trip that is 2 years late.

I am down for the traditional dates as well in an effort to sustain some type of continuity with this ā€œeventā€, despite the fact that this really is just a loosely orchestrated ā€œget-togetherā€.
I am also down for whatever works for the most people.

If you go to St. George you should meet with @fj55-100.

We are good for all weekends except the last in June and the last in July. Prefer Father's Day weekend. Second choice would be a early to middle weekend in July.
