Hey all Pig Owners - probably should reach out in a different way, but since PP20 is over and I have all of you in one place => looks like my 1969 FJ55 is going to need an engine rebuild on the original F engine. Before I shell out $1500-$2000 grand for this...is there any different option I should think about?

Isn't there a country song about running out of beer? East bound and down.
"The boys are thirsty in Atlanta and there's beer in Texarkana
And we'll bring it back no matter what it takes"

You know life is getting desperate when circumstances remind you of a country song!

I know you are kidding us about not knowing the true reference to East Bound and Down!
Burt Reynolds - mustache only rivaled by Tom Selleck - wailing on a Pontiac Trans Am...

So, you're wanting to keep it original? If so, probably best to rebuild what you got. If not, how about a 2F/4speed? 2Fs don't seem to be particularly difficult to find if you're willing to pay some shipping or take a weekend trip.

I think @Lifelong40Fan asked the right question, do you want to keep it original?. Rebuild if you want to keep it original or drop in a 2F if you want an easy swap. I would be tempted to skip the 2F and drop in a 3FE with a mated 5 speed if I wasn't going original but wanted all Toyota. I don't think that's an overly difficult swap but I am not an expert by any means.

I had longer term plans for a potential engine swap just hadn’t expected it so soon. I am not tied to keeping the original 1F. I like the idea of a 1981+ 2F that I could have Mosley rev up but a 3FE could be interesting and then there is the 1FZ-FE option especially after seeing that FJ40 with that swap on BAT. I am leaning toward keeping it Toyota. The snowball effect is occurring too because with the engine out I really should take care of some rust underneath.

I visited a shop in Dubai, SebSports last year. He does some fantastic work on old 40's, 45's, LV's, etc. He had three Japanese fire truck front clips in the shop when I was there waiting for projects to use them on. He uses the front axle (disk brakes), the 3FE engine, 5 speed trans, wiring harness and instrument cluster. All of these were very low KM's and one only had 6,000 km showing on the cluster. He talked like it was relatively easy to drop into a 1F or 2F machine but then again he has done many of them. Don't quote me but I recall him saying they cost something like $4k each so a relatively cheap option for what you get.

The one on BAT has a 1FZ-F and I'm sure the motor was installed in South America. Agree the 1FZ-FE would be an interesting swap. Just make sure you get wiring harness, cluster, etc. Good luck with the pondering.

You’re not gonna find a less expensive or less hassle route than a $1,500 - $2,000 rebuild, which I don’t know how accurate that quote is, but would be pretty amazing. If you do end up doing the rebuild, would you please start a thread and post prices and sources for the parts, as well as what all machine work was done and dyno numbers?

Sounds like your starting to go down the rabbit hole of restoration/upgrade. If your original 1F is rebuildable the just get it done and continue to enjoy a running and driving vehicle. You can always swap out in the future. The key is having FUN with your piggie on the road and it gives you time to search, acquire parts, and plan your attack for the upgrade. :steer: 👍

why does it need the rebuild? Low compression? Bad bearings? Top and bottom? blew a rod through the block? Can you still drive it?
People are always taking 2Fs out for swaps, I'd grab one of those and slap EFI on it.

I reached out to that guy last night. He has someone in line to buy already.

Engine overheated...I thought because timing wasn’t set properly. Anyway, leaky gasket and yes low compression too. Won’t know about anything else until we open her up. The engine will still turnover and run but not well so not drivable at this time.

I spent several hours last night searching the Internet for info and engines and prices. My head was spinning and I now see some wisdom in rebuilding the 1F and just get it running again to have some FUN which is why I bought it in the first place. The rebuild is one thing but then I started thinking install a new clutch while it is out $275, new Champion aluminum radiator $200, new multi-blade plastic fan to replace the 4 blade steel one, new water pump $100, new thermostat $25...I just created a new rabbit hole! Ha!

Awesome Dude, so it’s build thread time, let’s discuss all this in that thread & leave this for updates from our intrepid explorers.
