PHH & metal tube replaced using re-routed silicone hose

One more thing, do a search on silicone hose and really read about it. Over the road truckers used to use the silicone hose but stopped because water evaporates from it. They were losing around 5gallons a year. true thats over 100,000 miles but nonetheless they were losing water. Antifreeze stayed put but the water evaporated.

In fact there was a show on the discovery channel about this very thing.

I considered holding off and buying the reroute kit, but since I already bought the silicone short kit I changed out my PHH last week using it. I followed Pin_Head's advice, cut the PHH, unscrewed top tab, broke bottom tab off, etc. Took me 1 hour, and that was taking my time.

Then spent another 2 hours changing thermostat, draining all coolants (kills grass, fwiw), flushing and refilling with Toyota Red.

Did you drink a beer per Pin Head's advice?

I substituted an overdose of Popeye's spicy chicken and some cajun rice. Homemade cherry pie for dessert. Exploding in 3... 2.... 1....

The re-route does as described above... but is also a lot easier to install than the smaller hose... one element of the "pesky" is trying to get the 60mm piece of hose between 2 rigid metal nipples. That is what caused me the most frustration and caused me to find the best, most flexible silicone hose I could find.

The re-route kit eliminates some of the frustration and gives folks an option they were requesting and requesting.

And coming up on 200k, I am glad I don't have a stock replacement PHH as I would have to do it over... and I am planning on keeping my 80 for many more miles.

No wonder it took you two more hours. No hush puppies?

Biscuits, mi amigo. I forgot to mention biscuits.

The approach Pin_Head describes is the best for doing the old short tube.

I honestly would've gone for the re-route, but I'd already bought the short kit and didn't want to wait to do the rest. The idea of eliminating two more potential leak spots is nice. The idea of not spending more Popeye's $$ on another kit outweighed it. ;)

Yes, it is that easy. Remove the top tube bolt and top hose. Cut the bottom hose in two. Then wiggle the top of the tube back and forth until the lower tab breaks off. It takes about 5 minutes and you can drink a beer while you are doing it. Once it breaks off, pull it out from the top. Install 60 mm of new hose on the tube at your bench, then remove the other half of the PHH at the block and then reinstall the tube. Tighten up the clamps and bolt and you are done. It looks stock, except the lower tab is gone. You don't need it because the lower hose and the upper tab are plenty.[/QUOTE]

Well today I finally went at the PHH and followed Pin_head"s advise on the wiggle technique, when I read his explanation on this it seemed so easy.....Well it was!! from jacking the rig up taking the FR left tire off and removing the rubber flap and followed pin heads technique it was done in 1.5 hours I found it really easy if you unbolt the brake line bracket that attaches to the chassis and bend it a little just enough to get more room so you can move your hands more but be careful not to kink the hard line, I was able to get to hands in there at the same time which helped a lot in installing the silicone hose over the metal pipe that attaches to the block, also would like to thank all fellow mudders on posting there techniques on there install which also helped

I’m looking at doing this mod myself on my newly acquired 97. Having never done one before, what is the official p/n or name for what’s been largely called the Pesky Heater Hose?

its just a 3 inch piece of gates green stripe 5/8 heater hose with two breeze constant tension clamps. remove the driver front tire, undo mud splash guards, remove tranny dipstick bolts so its not locked down and get ready to curse reaching in there.

@Ianmagary the knock sensor is around that area you'll be working on so be VERY careful or you WILL break it.

Fixed :)

... better yet, spend a minute and just remove it (unscrews easily) while working on the PHH, especially if you have bigger thumbs...

cheers,
george.

I did the PHH recently and had a fear from all the comments posted, but found it wasn’t that hard after all (thanks to all the comments and posts). I came very close to having a local shop do the work, but glad I decide to go for it myself.

1. I removed the top bolt and left the lower bolt alone.
2. I cut the crimped hose clamp with dikes and used needle-nose pliers to slide the other clamp off. No special tools.
3. I grabbed the PHH with channel locks and rotated a few times to break it free and then just pulled it off by hand. I rotated the hard tube to remove the PHH in one piece. This bends the hard tube at the mid-bolt mount but keeps it attached, no need to break it off.
4. Installed the new hose and clamps. Done in less than 30 minutes.
5. Drink a #6.

My PHH was in excellent condition. It is in my spare parts bag. I don’t see the need to remove the hard tube and think it is actually easier to just keep it in place. Hope to get another 200k out of the replacement.

Fwiw,

I usually refrain from making negative posts. It doesn't help anybody. But I just can't bite my tongue any longer. How is it that taking a 3" hose and making it a 3' hose is a good idea? I mean the factory hose is good for at least 100k I've personally seen a factory hose on 325k mile fzj. I just don't get this mod. Its really not that hard to change the phh. It's just time consuming.

I'm not bashing anybody not am I attempting to be an a****** but I just don't get how taking a 3" hose and making it a 3' hose that wraps around the engine compartment is a good idea.

Again just my .02 worth take it for nothing more than that.

My original PHH at 111,111 miles looked brand new and came out in one piece :)

Replaced it with a Samco silly hose and breeze clamps

It wasn't a hard job by any means (especially in my shop), but not sumthin I'd want to do on trail

Now, I highly doubt my short silly hose will ever fail and I doubt even a 3 foot silly hose will ever fail either, but IF they were to fail, I'd much rather have the ease of replacing the long hose and not have to deal with the metal pipe :meh:
