The guy who sold it was kind of crummy, but my Buddy said to buy it anyway, regardless of the black smoke, cracked tires, and oily carpet. Went to my financial advisor and took out a loan
I brought the thing home and had my buddy come down from Phoenix to get some things sorted out.

He took head and carb up to Phoenix for work.
This is after the head was retrieved from the shop, and the carb was also rebuilt.

While I wait to get the parts back for reassembly, I tore the carpet out, which was complete crap. If you have any recommendations for replacement on this, that would be optimal!

P.S. I also took the radiator to a shop in south Tucson for Mexicans to run through it with a fine toothed comb.

Hey man, thanks for the tip on the carpet. I saw that thread, and am debating whether to purchase that "OG" style mat, or get some rubber type setup that's washable.
When I bought it, the guy had this electric fuel pump connected to a 1/2 gallon milk jug with gas-o-line. He was a jerk, man, saying that he did not want to include it in sale. Complete wack job. I've been lurkin on your post, big fan.

Great start. I just pulled the trigger on that carpet set. These are simple machines that will make a lifetime of smiles with just simple maintenance. This early heavy lifting will pay dividends down the road. Welcome and we are all here if you get hung up on something.

Being in Hot Country, you might consider some Dynamat or other heat/noise insulator under whatever you end up laying down on top of it.

So you figure the gas tank is full of crap, hence the jug and pump?

The OEM fuel pump is mechanical and easy to replace if you haven't already figured it out. About $90. Then you can save the milk jug setup for your next resurrection.

Since the carpet is out, I plan on dynamatting the rig, but not sure if its better to do the whole rig, or just up to the back seat? I figured I could put more cost effective rubber mats in the back, considering a bunch-o-crap will be thrown back there anyway!

As far as A/C, I have never had a car with A/C and I sure as s*** ain't about to start now! Just kidding, I might get that hooked up too, but not immediately.

As far as the tank, I don't think its messed up, at least that's what I was told. He said the previous pump was broke and installed this pristine set up for me! My friend Alvis is gonna sell me one from another motor he has. Unfortunately, the surf blue is actually Wet-Sand Paper Blue, and will also need TLC in 15 years or so. The seller said there was some sick Patiner, however its just the roof!

The parts came in today from Phoenix with @Cruddz delivering parts and offering novice advice.

We were able to pull the pistons out the bottom for cleaning and reringing. Alvis also honed the cylinders and almost knocked his head off. Below you can see the nice blade finish on the block

the pistons were pretty crummy, and we had to be resourceful with how we cleaned them. Needless to say, good enough is good enough

this is Alvis, my only white friend. He likes to torment me and threatens deportation every time I see him

Well, our (mine and @Cruddz) ambitions were high, but El Chivo did not crank over this weekend. we had a massive battle with the rockers, including forgetting the bolts in Phoenix, as well as not knowing the bolts in the valve train had to fit juuuuuust right, which is an awesome learning experience. Valve adjustment was made and we had to wrestle the manifold in place. Just would not go in buttery

Can anyone let me know what goes here? Side of where the carb goes. By the time we get to work on it again, crudZ will have the replacement anyway, but I'd like to know ahead of time.

The plan is to hit it hard again next week and hopefully get it started then! I also got the green light from my financer to get a credit card for tires! We also will be taking the manifold off again for resetting.

Still impressive progress!!!

That was where part of the EGR system went, it went to the EGR valve as well as to the PCV. I capped the left (JimC part) and still use the PCV side, someone else can chime in by I'd imagine you can still utilize the vent from the manifold, perhaps a "Y" at the vacuum port for the brake booster.

Well we figured out why the PO installed an electrictric fuel pump, it seems the gas hard lines were cut and crimped closed, very strange

Over the course of 2 weekends and one afternoon me and @Cruddz were able to assemble, and fire up, Escobar! We ran into multiple minor headaches that set us back, but this is a story of triumph, so I will post my aggravation on Facebook. Haha (only joking)

Ultimately, there is still tons of work to be done, but in the immediate future things of priority are:
Gas tank- crummy looking doodoo all in there, must be cleaned.
Spaghetti wiring- if someone can explain this contraption on a third grade level, I will be endebted to you.
Tires- current set up are cracked and awful
Emissions exam- I hope to score a C-, cuz in college I learned D's get degrees
Roll up to the Copper State Cruisers get-together here in Tucson, and get initiated into the worlds greatest frat.

While while I waited for alvis to come down, I went to the Toyota dealership and purchased OEM finger paint to touch up my dirt flaps.

We were finally able to complete the spaghetti wiring! Me and @Cruddz have excellent team work, and between the both of us we have half a brain.

We were able to remove the gas tank, that had tons of vintage gas in there, this will need professional care to restore to factory specs.

Before spending too much time on cleaning that tank I'd make sure that it doesn't still have a recall open for the replacement tank.
