Well it's a long story so I will try to keep it fairly short but stick with me because it will be worth it.

It all started years ago when I bought my first 4wd a 1989 fj62 3f dual fuel powered 5 speed manual saggy suspension leaking exhaust the works it needed some love but it was straight and pretty rust free (at the time)

That was about 4 years ago I think and since then it has been my daily driver and my only vehicle.

A quick look at it before anything happened

To get it roadworthy here in Victoria it needed a few things so I got to work on it, the most notable was the suspension was shagged so a 2'' Dobinsons lift was fitted by a local workshop for a reasonable price and the other jobs that needed to be done were done by me and before you know it I had a registered 60.

Quick look at the difference after the lift.

The old girl slowly evolved with what little finances we could drag up second hand parts were generally the norm for our budget.

The alloy bar was removed and replaced with a used arb steel one.

Plenty of little things happened over the years but I won't go into to much detail.

Just under a year ago my dream of fitting a 12ht finally became a reality when I had one fitted at quite an expense I might add.

Here is a photo of it in it's almost most recent form.

Here is where it gets sad last year (December 2014) I had a little crash that if it wasn't for my agreed value insurance would have spelled the end for the 60 and after all the drama the decision was made that for the sake of our little family we would update to a 100 series and give us some more comfort and mod cons. This however was difficult for me as I have a bond with this old rig and in seeing that my lovely fiance (best women in the world) deemed it okay to keep the 60 and still buy the 100 for the family and my new daily.

The damage.

And the rig that will soon become the daily (hopefully pick it up next weekend)

Well that's enough for one post I think, the 60 build has taken a new direction now as the pressure is off it to do the daily commute and family duties but I will get into the plans in the next installment.

Time for part 2.

So now that the 60 is free of family duties and the daily grind it's become young and free again so to speak (wish I was :bang:) the plan now is to simplify as in it's to a tourer anymore it's just a play thing and I can build it the way I would of years ago before the kids came along.

So I will first have to replace some panels after the stack and there is a little rust that needs attention at this stage the removal of things like flares and side steps is underway along with a general tidy up of the interior and exterior a paint job is on the list but it's a while away yet mechanically it just needs a 3" exhaust, a snorkel and a tune up. Oh and I'd like to fit some bigger tyres most likely 33x10.5 BFG mud terrains.

A few pictures to show the new direction of the build which is very much inspired by the US style 60's.

One flare removed (this panel needs replacing but gave me an idea of how it will look)

And some of the inspiration (mostly from fellow mud members)

That's it for now will update again when something happens cheers.

Hah! - and we in the US imagine that the Aussies get all the good stuff, and therefore (perhaps) have all the good builds, too. Nice photos and story, so far.

Thanks mate. We have plenty of good stuff here. The reason I want to do a "US style" build is I like to do things differently here you generally see a 60 with all very similar bolt on accessories all over it. I also like the minimal look.

No doubt! I was just thinking how much I like those fender flares with the integrated mud flaps. Wish we had those here. Look forward to the rest of your build Paynay.

You keen to sell the flairs mate to fund other things I am chasing the rears for mine

Hey sick yeh mate I'm happy to part with them send me a pm and we can sort it out.

Thanks very much drillduty wish I had a big flow of cash to pour into it but it's more like a tiny dribble so it will be slow going but who cares it's as much about the build as it is the finished product.

Well thought it was time to update this thread, not a whole lot to add at this point the old girl still runs like a champ and pulls like a train. I drive it now and then sadly the rego is up in a couple of months and not sure if we can afford to pay it. So I may have to think about club reg to keep it on the road.
