Heading home from Trollhole's today, it was clear that only half of my cluster was illuminating. Before I search the board, has anyone run in to this? I assume it's just a burnt out bulb - this truck still has an original headlight... But man, it's dark in a 40 at night!

Your cheapest and easiest fix is to unscrew the speedo cable from the back of the gauge cluster and remove the two screws holding the cluster in place. I would recommend laying a rag on you steering column so as not to scratch your paint and then carefully tilt the top of the cluster forward so you can get to the backside. I think there are four bulbs, all the same size. Take one with you to the auto parts store and instead just replacing the one that's burned out, buy a multi-pack of replacements and swap them all out and keep the good ones as spares.

If you have money and time, you can upgrade to LEDs. I've seen some that were too bright in my opinion. I think @JohnVee has first-hand experience with those in his 40.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY before removing the cluster from the dash or it is possible that you will inadvertently weld it there when the ammeter connections ground out.

I still haven't installed my no-longer-available LED strip/new gauge kit. I actually forgot all about it till now. Thanks for the great idea, David! I replaced all lights except headlights and gauge lights with LED. My 40 thread should list all the part numbers.

CCOT, and probably others, sell super bright incandescent bulbs but I hear that they can cause enough condensation to render the gauges unreadable at times.

There are some tabs around the lights that some people break off to get a better spread of light on the gauges.

Look in the 40 FAQ, Jeremy. Plenty of good info on this subject there.

^^^^ What he said. I'm not sure about your 40's model year but in my '77, there are lights under the dash pad over the gear shifter and under the dash over the lever for the heater. Check to see if those are working as they do give a little added light in the cab at night.

I dunno, the speedo moves and at least one bulb is lit! You're WAY ahead of me...

I replaced mine w/ LEDs and cut the metal shields out and don't think it's too bright - however, for the first time ever I'm no longer running them at full brightness. I posted some pics in one of my threads in this forum a while back. I think it was less than $20 to do it all.

Side note - Thanks to @lt1fire my Hyundai now has a shiny, CLEAR, new windshield. Having it replaced was much easier than me washing it ;). Thanks for the hookup, brother.

no problem, dude. I just wish I could have got the price down cheaper :)

Thanks for all of the tips, y'all! This is some very good information. Yeah, if there are more lights in the cab, I need to find them and hook them up! I can't see anything in the cab at night. With this new Saginaw steering, the steering wheel is dangerously easy to move, so the slightest movement put me all over the road (I nearly got sideways when I took a sip of my Gatorade). I was wanting to go with tall / skinnies, but I think I may have to go wider. I got the 8274 installed but it only reels out... Need to get that resolved... I'll post on my build thread later so I don't clog this chat up.

Never seen a 40 speedo needle that far over to the right
For what it's worth, I was heading downhill... But yeah, I kept it between 55 and 65 for the most part. 3:73's came stock in 1981 and I don't think the PO swapped them out - the engine wasn't struggling or anything.

Pretty cool Brett, Sam turned me on to Elk steak wrapped in bacon a couple years back. Eat well my friend
