What rear axle are you planning on that has a parking brake?
80-83 FJ40 or FJ60?

What is planned tire size? 33"? 4.11 might be a bit deep on the street with the diesel. I'd drive it with the 3.70's first.
Also, bigger calipers on 40/60 discs don't really help, it's more of a placebo then most realize. Rotor diameter is what really makes the difference, then use bigger calipers to compliment that.
Caliper piston size, as well as pad surface area, are indeed variables in braking force since they are both means by which the hydraulic pressure in your brake line is transmitted to force and friction at the disc.
Read what I posted again. Maybe slower.
Of course they are, I didn’t say they don’t matter.
The 60/40 brakes can already lock up the front rotors if paired with the right master cylinder and everything is in proper operating condition. Upgrading calipers that can already lock up brakes doesn’t make sense.
OK sure, stock calipers can lock up, but calipers with larger pistons require less pedal force to create the same braking force. Are you saying that’s not an upgrade? What am I missing here?
Still not sure how rotor diameter plays into this.
I’m on it!!!Great discussion. @Cowboy45 who is 13 is getting diverse thoughts here which is something I advocate to him. I have asked @Cowboy45 to do some homework on this. First:
1) determine rotor size, caliper size, and brake pad size for fj40 disc, Stock OEM.
2) determine same attributes as 1) above but for a ‘95 4runner disc brake system
Then compare to see impact of 4runner caliper only on stock 40 disc vs 4runner caliper and rotor change together.
