Ok, I was replacing the brushes on the alternator today. We drove back from Richmond yesterday and I have a little thingy that displays battery voltage at startup. It read 12.1 at the end of the trip an has ben doing odd things of late.
Anyway, I started it heard an odd whirr and saw a twisted alternator belt. So, starts taking this apart and saw the odd belt alignment.

I am guessing the shiny bit with rubber is the inner bit of the balancer? Big $$$

yeah that HB's gotta go. glad you caught it before a complete failure resulting in an inop water pump.

Yeah HB is out. Stop driving it until you get a new one installed.

Way to be paying attention! Good catch! You possibly saved yourself from major and expensive damage.

Rockauto has them in stock for $300-500. Not cheap but not what it could have been.
Might as well change the belts and pulleys while you are there..also check you water pump bearing, alt bearing and ac clutch bearing.

Ironically, I had just changed the brushes in the alternator for other reasons, started it heard strange noise and shut it down. Took me too long to spot the angle of the A/C belt....

Isn't that thing on to like 600ft lbs?

Look for HB rebuilding if you are on a budget.

Book says 304ftlbs. Most likely has locktight. A LITTLE Heat may be required to crack bolt loose.

304 is tight enough....... Had not expected this

$514 to my local Lexus Dealer. In Maryland, Lexus gives discounts, Toyota does not. Go figure.

You can either buy a new torque wrench or a torque multiplier (Neiko Pro 03715B) from Lowes.

Harbor freight has torque wrenches Pittsburgh 3/4 drive 50-300 $85. Then you'll need a socket. Or the Icon brand for $400 but it's a lot longer.

Isn't my challenge holding crankshaft still? Or does that little inspection window in the transmission case offer help?

You can place a 14 mm deep well 6 point impact socket on one of the flywheel (flex plate) bolts to stop the rotation. Just make damn sure you remove it before starting the engine. Through that inspection window.

Ok, new HB here Wednesday, A/C bearing and Alternator Pulley ordered as well

Time to open the Bible and do some reading

Works really good for tightening but I had one recently that was stubborn and could not get off with this method, socket kept coming off when we really started to pull on the breaker bar

Had to use a breaker bar to the frame rail and bump it with the starter

I had to do it this way for both loosening and tightening.
My starter didn't cut it to loosen the bolt.
Must be a impact rated socket and 6 point for it to stay on.

I lock the engine with a big impact socket. I do not put it to a bolt head to lock up. I stick it between one of the fly wheel holes and the side of the bell housing, rotate engine till jammed and locked then you should be good. Remember to pull back out.

You already ordered but partsouq has them for $240 for the next guy.
It’s pretty easy to build a holder tool. I have had good luck with a 1/2 air impact breaking the bolt loose. It’s probably a good time to replace the oil pump seal and front main seal while you’re in there.

FWIW I bumped the starter with the breaker bar ratchet strapped to the frame to break it loose. To tighten I used the harbor freight 3/4 drive monster torque wrench with the 14mm impact socket on the flywheel.

Neither of these had an outcome as dramatic as I thought it might be.

Should be able to borrow a 3/4 drive torque wrench from an auto parts store. Your socket needs to be a 30mm shallow socket I bought the harbor freight set but you could probably borrow that also.

I like your technique. I did this on a 2jz. Bent the breaker bar to crap tho..
