Ok,

been on the phone with the shop on and off all day. Going over there tomorrow to look at it. He says it measures .02 off arched in the center causing the cams to wobble just enough he things they would potentially bind. I have intentions of picking up the head, but want him to talk through with me where he things the issue is and what his plan would be. when I talked with him around 4 he had the correct Jig on the way from a fellow shop in the next town(smaller town) and again assured me he would not charge me anything unless it was done correctly and I was happy. Regardless My plan is to pick it up.

120MM and Insane1 are giving you quality advice, your shop has not ''straightened'' an 80s head . That Is not what you should be looking for :worms:. You want the shop that has worked on the most 80s with positive results. Also they will know If your heads worth fixing to begin with or needs fixing.. :) Good Luck..!
 
You need to send your head to Lamont's Machine shop in Ft. Myers, Fl. He knows Land Cruisers.-it'll be worth the shipping---even if you have to pay both ways--no gouge!
 
I'm coming into this a bit late but my comment might be educational for others. Our heads, and for that matter all Inline 6 heads are long. Once they're off of the block, don't they always have a bow naturally? I think we all have had to have our heads milled when we were doing the head gasket project.

The FSM says to check for camshaft clearances ONLY when the head is on the block and secured with all head bolts, torqued correctly. So, it stands to reason to expect a little bow once the head is on the bench, no?

In my experience with O'Reilly's, if it's only available online, it will say so. If it needs to be special ordered, it will say that as well. But if it says "unavailable" online, it's not available, period, and will not be.

Actually the FSM has "truness" tolerances for the top of the block, bottom of the head and the intake manifold plane as well.

my FSM (97 LX450) wants "surfaces contacting the cylinder block and the manifolds" ... pics show both intake and exhaust manifold surfaces ... maximum warpage for the cylinder block side is .15mm and for the manifold side .10mm ... if warpage is greater than maximum it says "replace the cylinder head" ... I can find no mention of the warpage for the top of the block.... and there is NO advice to machine the head... which will probably distort/displace the camshaft bearing bottoms when the head is retorqued to the block and cause cam bore misalignment...IMO

Correct. If head is out of tolerance you replace the head.

Same with the block.
 
To expand on this the factory manual states that if the head and/or block are out of specification they are to be REPLACED. NOT machined or surfaced.


This being said, 1FZ blocks have been decked and heads have been surfaced.

Do remember that removing material from the block deck or the head effectively makes the timing chain too long. I would suggest a custom aftermarket head gasket (from someone such as Cometic) that is thicker to compensate for the material that has been removed from the block/head.

120MM, my son work's at O'Reilly's corporate headquarters in their I.T. department, so I'll have him check and see if we can in fact get that head.
