Not good news from Machine shop

To expand on this the factory manual states that if the head and/or block are out of specification they are to be REPLACED. NOT machined or surfaced.

This being said, 1FZ blocks have been decked and heads have been surfaced.

Do remember that removing material from the block deck or the head effectively makes the timing chain too long. I would suggest a custom aftermarket head gasket (from someone such as Cometic) that is thicker to compensate for the material that has been removed from the block/head.

Yes my cylinder head was surfaced even though I struggled with the decision... The recommended machine shop that did it insisted it should be done and claimed they had done "lots!" In prior years.....my mind didn't really believe them but my heart said "trust them ... They know more than I do!" ... In the final analysis they were able to clean gasket material and general corruption off the surface that I couldn't budge without resorting to heavy duty abrasives that probably would have done more harm. And I hope the chain tensioner takes up the little bit of slack this may have caused .. ... Life was a little easier with older pushrod engines. I often wish we just had the old ford 300inch 6cyl. Or better ... A Toyota clone complete with metal timing gears etc.

Anyway .... I am curious if my camshafts are still reasonably well aligned or if I can expect loud noises now out of the top end. ... My motor has 325++k km on it and the cylinder wall cross hatching was still very obvious. I remember how hard my father used to be on engines ....and they always rewarded him with long lives and high mileage....maybe we obsess to much and should just drive them.

120MM, i just got off the phone with my son, here's what he told me. He said that the vendor PTQ is one of the largest engine and cylinder head re-builders in the country. Now if you want one of their heads, or engines, what you HAVE TO DO is go into your local O'reilly's store and place an order for the part. He said that to place the order you don't have to deposit any money, O'Reilly's will place the order with PTQ. Then PTQ will check their stock once they get the order, and see if they have a finished engine or head sitting on the shelf, if not they will check to see if they have a rebuild able core in stock. Based on stock they will let O'Reilly's know a shipping and delivery date. Now if they have no stock or rebuild able core on hand they will tell O'Reilly's that your order has been canceled. My son said that since they are such a large engine re builder, and get cores from all over the country, that there's a really good chance they will be able to supply the head.

I tried this over the summer and have a good friend/ long time manager at Oreilly's. Not available at the time. I've since sourced a used head, just arrived yesterday. Hopefully will be a good core.

That's been my experience, as well.

The local O'Reilly's has been my "go to" source for auto parts when I'm stateside, (just a few blocks away) but basically if the part isn't already available in our region, I've not had luck getting them.

I'd be looking at trying to get a used one. Always a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to these situations. A member in our club swapped out his engine and had a hard time trying to sell it. Ended up selling the whole engine I think for $600 to some kids who were planning to use it in a drag car.

Well in that case, I'd like to order my Flux Capacitor please, my 80 has been rather sluggish lately ...

BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

A couple years back I saw they had Ford GT40 heads for like $200 apiece listed on their website. I scurried to the store and tried to order them, and was laughed out of the place. Seems that you could order them, but they'd substitute an E7E head instead.

While this would technically "work" on a 5.0 Ford V8, it'd choke performance down horribly.

My persona experience if the head has had enough heat put into it to warp it, the temper (hardness) of the head is probably gone too. My head was warped after my radiator dropped its guts, but not worth repairing. The shop RC tested it and it had gone to mallow. No point straigiting a soft head, so bought an aftermarket head at the time. Might be worth getting a hardness test done but I can't recall the spec.

Sorry, what does RC testing stand for? Thanks!
