Engines back in & first road test was a success. Was a little nervous at first, but it's all good.

Just a quick note, judging from the pic the "joiner" tube that mates the two pieces of the lower radiator hose looks pretty rusted. May want to clean or replace if you haven't already. While you have the opportunity, do a really good block flush too.

You may have already done it, but thought I'd bring it up in case you hadn't.

Thanks for the heads up!

We had the block steam cleaned & some other processses done to remove all the rusty sludge. Obviously missed some stuff - ill double check to make sure that is clean now thanks for the heads up.

Did you figure out what's causing your super low compression?

Not yet. Haven't had a chance to crack it open. Might try to do valve adjustment today if I came get some free time. If that doesn't work, I'm gonna take it to a local Toyota guy to do some diagnostics for me. I love my '91, but there is a 96 for sale here that is tempting me in lieu of my frustrations. I may be dreaming, but just want it to runs little. Ore consistent and smooth so that I clan have more confidence.

How's the new motor run? Noticeable difference? If so, what kind of improvements?

Well,

After 8 months and lots of $$$ and grease, we brought her home from open heart surgery.

Many thanks to cdan, johnheld, onur & summitcruisers!

Great build!

How does she run after that rebuild?

So far, so good.

Ive put less than 150 miles on it so im taking things slow to break it in right. After 500 I'll open it up a bit.

I will say this, it runs smooth as silk. Seems to have better power, and doesnt sound like its about to explode.

Couple pics for the innerwebs:

Pulled the plastic rear bumper cover & mud flaps today. Found some Rustoleum paint thats formulated specifically for this application.

Havent reinstalled yet, but everything looks good. 20140715_203232.jpg 20140715_203213.jpg

I've been thinking of doing this, but wasn't sure which product to use. My rear bumper pieces are mismatched and the color difference bugs me. Can you take a pic or send me a PM with the info of the product you used? Thanks!

BTW, looking good. I'd love to hear an update on how your motor is running. I've been considering a more extensive rebuild, but not sure its worth it. Let me know what you think so far.

Don't forget to do the white lettering!

This truck is great, and this is an inspirational thread.
You have me considering to add the rear bumper panels back.
I have to fix the body rust first though.

Keep up the great work!

I think it made my rig look 5 years newer.

Also began instalking switch panel. Im almost done with the exhaust system, when those leaks are patched I'll install the TRE's ive got & do the axle rebuild.

When thats done I'll finish the rack and wire all the LED's 2014-07-16 22.53.16.jpg 2014-07-16 22.52.40.jpg 20140716_182655.jpg 20140716_181822.jpg

Welcome aboard and the slow lane! If you have not checked out Jon Held's site you should do so asap. He has a lot of great info there. Also if you have not purchased a FSM you should make that number one priority. I have had my 92' for nearly three years and so far I have done the following:

OME suspension/dampner
33" BFG AT w/steel wheels
EMSpowered exhaust
new starter
new alternator
plugs,wires, dis cap/o-ring
fan clutch mod w/10K diff fluid
new G31 battery
new +/- battery cables
all fluids changed
New Thermostat
all new OEM brakes
valves adjusted
desmogged
On-board air systems (york) in process

I am noob myself so may be a case of blind leading the blind but I am willing to help so let me know if I can do so. I live in New Braunfels and have access to both Guadelupe/Comal river so come on by for a float sometime.
Do u have the link to Jon helds site please

Tell me about that switch panel. That looks nice, I'd like to add something similar to mine.

So,

Just got jome from around a 400 mile road trip. My impressions:

The engine runs smoothly, and seems to have a little more power on flat roads. The infamous kickdown cable needs to be properly adjusted bc I did struggle on hills. I couldnt maintain 70mph without dropping down a gear & darn near had to push the pedal to the floor before it kicked down.

With the ac on full blast the temp gauge never waivered, even in 100 degree Texas heat.

I averaged around 11.5 mpg.

The check engine light is still on and throwing codes for faulty O2 sensors. I have replacements but the nuts are welded on. Once these are replaced I bet I can pick up some mpgs and hopefully a little power.

All in all, I'm extremely satisfied with the rebuild.

I averaged around 11.5 mpg.

Hate to say it, but that's about average for all the 3FE 80s. I was happy to hit 13 driving across Texas, where it was almost completely flat.
