So ...... we have a 3D scan. We have an OEM top cover and possibly a way to 3D print them.
Ultimately we ( there are 3 parties involved ) need to get together to see if we can make it happen. Lots of logistics and some financial outlay required.

Ps: I do have a few sets of the oem split case ebrake components available; cast steel oem rear bearing retainer, new oem longer Tcase output shaft and the matching 19-spline ebrake drums.

The last update from @orangefj45 is dated November 26, 2017. I was hoping they had a chance to meet up and make some progress.

I saw a 40 with an h55f and reshaped cane this weekend. It looked solid not hollow though. @ridefastflyfar what cane did you use?
Sorry for the late reply. I have an early H55, (based on the input bearing size), and it came with a solid, one piece shifter cane. Rosebud and a little bend made it work just fine, even with a tuffy console.

Which top cover did you have? Didn't think anything needed to be done with 40 series shift cane when the transmission had the 40 series top cover was used. My skinny cane is from a RHD and will need to straighten out the bend of if I end up using it.

Playing hooky today to wrench on the BJ42 and took a photo of the H55F w/40-series top plate in 2nd gear. The truck has the original cast iron bell housing. I chose not to use the aluminum bell housing I have since I couldn’t sort out the transmission mount to address the 5 degree? clock of the transmission.

I know nothing about the aluminum bellhousing for a 3B engine. I have aluminum bellhousing from a 84 HJ47RV with a 2H. Do not believe anything from a 4X series had the transmission rotated. The petrol the difference was the bellhousing had a 3F on it. Not sure what the difference was on the diesels when they rotated but I am curious what it was. What shifter are you using, series, year, LHD or RHD? Still doing research on shifters.

LHD 60-series shifter pictured above; purchased new from the local Toyota dealership. I think the later BJ60’s & BJ70’s had the aluminum bell housings. The cast iron bell housing for the 3B is clocked differently than the aluminum bell housing.

I had to grind the cast iron bell housing to accommodate the larger input bearing retainer of the H55F. I’m guessing the same time the H55F received the updated input shaft bearing & retainer was the same time the bell housings started to clock the transmission.

I not sure if the bellhousings rotated on the same date in all models and all engine types. From what I've found 10/85 was the date of change in the H55F. There would have to been changes in the bellhousings for the new bearing retainer but that would not have effected using the older transmissions wit the changes to the bellhousing. How the rotation effected other things besides the crossmember I'm not sure but still researching it.

Of the 3-piece cross members; the L-brackets seem to be the component that was redesigned to accommodate the clocked transmissions. The middle section of the 3-piece cross members appear to be level to the rubber isolator/mount from the information I’ve gathered.

Bump for update on top plate project.

The clocking began at some point in 1985. I forget the date now. It may have been the same time the switch was made to the “long” h42.

Searching for shifters in other markets on 60 and 70 series the dates vary. Earliest FJ7X I see have a 3F listed. Still haven't figured out if the HJ and BJ bellhousings rotated too.

Since the US never got any H55F transmissions none of the shift canes would be stock for the US. Figure search other markets for better options. I am also wondering if other markets got a long four speed but instead the five speed was just used. Other market seem to have plenty of five speeds once the 40 series end.

Did you have to modify the access cover or use a non stock cover.

HJ and BJ bellhousings also rotated. I have a couple here.

I have the parts to get after this project - it is a real unicorn ranch - the only thing lacking is time.... I am mating this setup to a 1HZ.

If someone wants to offer up help in putting the H55, top plate, and t-case together I am interested... There will likely be some hard technical questions better answered by those who have done all variations of this - including the bell housing question.

My parts list:
NEW H55f
NEW old stock euro FJ40 split case
NEW old stock FJ40 H55 top plate (yes.... I have one)
Aussie 40-series cross member ( I also have a 60 series member)
Late model Aussie transmission hump cover (the one with the lifted shifter hole)

Brett,

I have seen the setup your trying to do. It's basically the Tucker/Roma build after the flip over..... Let me find the thread
