MPG difference with 2F engine between 4 speed and h55f 5 speed (1 Viewer)

My experience is in a 2F 60 with 33" tires and 3.73 gears but I'll share for reference. I did see an increase with my H55.

At 70mph with the 4-spd I was getting 11-12mpg. With the H55 at 70-75mph, I get 14-16mpg depending on how many mountains on my trip. My 2F is stock with a header. 75mph in my truck is ~2500rpm with the H55 compared to ~3000 with the H42.
That's what I wanted to know. I'm going to install an H55F with a header on my FJ43. I don't cruise on the highway much, but I'd like to keep up with the traffic. Not concerned about the fuel mileage etc, just a more relaxed ride on road trips. Thanks

For me, it’s a little about babying the engine, enjoying the mindset and working on my truck. The money added to the drive train is not expected to provide big returns. I sure wish I was 5 years younger as these things take more strength and holding power than I probably have these days. I have done a few projects where just holding things with one hand while trying to get the first nut on is a challenge and frustrating.

I’ve been lucky to date… Except for the rear ambulance door glass and new weatherstripping. I need to be holding in place from the outside while pulling the rope on the inside…it’s just me. I’d ask my wife to help but I can see her accidentally letting the glass slip and then the ship hit the fan. It’s easier to wait for a friend to drop by and held hold it it in place.

That problem is…locally, my friends are older than I am 🤫
 
These threads always crack me up! It's a 40 with a 2F. People always ask me about the mileage in this thing and I tell them all its about 12MPG (in 2H, 4H, 4L, uphill, downhill, forward, reverse, with and against the wind). It's 12 MPG
 
As aerodynamic as a bread box or brick, That flat windshield really sucks when it causes ice to lift the wiper blades off the glass.
 
I'm thinking that it is more about trail-etiquette. My '75 didn't come with a cat. That means that if I'm scoring 12mpg, and the same truck fifty-years-ago, was making it to 16, then you wonder what happened to twenty-five percent of the fuel along the way? Is it making carbon monoxide at traffic stop lights? The exhaust kinda fills the cab when the wind is just right, especially when running without a hard-top. I live in the desert, and my FJ40 leads the group because of the bad body and tub seals, and the trail dust gets in, you can see it glued to the recesses of the steering wheel and gear-shifter knob from my sweat. I don't want smelly exhaust, but I know I'm gonna get at least a small amount in this rig.
