any update on the new lx top plates?

@orangefj45 may have a contact who can produce them.

@ERNRAM has the cad file.

@teleskier has the NOS top cover for reference.

I have a manufacturing contact in Michigan who is the metalcaster of the year, who has seen the part and guarantees that he can easily cast it to specification. Let’s see what Georg has come up with. There are multiple avenues to bring this part successfully to market.

I also have an OEM top cover; it's the one we used for the scan.

I'm flying to Seattle on Dec. 15th to meet with a manufacturer ( extremely well versed in Toyota components ) to discuss the project. We've had a couple of phone conversations about this. I plan on taking my top cover with me.....

Georg, hand carry that sucker!

@Racer65: Have you given any thought to reproducing the 60 series 4/5 speed outer transmission boot and metal ring?

That is another needed part for a 5 speed conversion, if using the 60 series shifter cane. Took me a bit to track down a used one for another 5 speed conversion project.

Not to hijack, but worth mentioning in this thread is the FJ Co. 1FZ -> H55F Bell Housing.

Why not just use the orginal solid BJ42 shifter cane?

Indeed.:hmm:

Georg,

I do have a BJ42 solid shifter cane if you want pattern it for the most OCD of customers. Lol

Thanks
Ernie

@ERNRAM:

To me it’s all about parts availability. If we hope to offer this to a large number of people, we probably need a source for transmission crossmembers, shift canes, transmission top covers, and shifter covers. Or we have to find a way to reproduce them. Otherwise each individual who wants to buy a top cover will have to source 35+ years old parts that were only made in limited supply. I personally haven’t ever seen BJ 42 left handed shift cane ever. I know that I could drive 30 minutes to your house and see that one above, but that would be the first.

Go to the FJ Company’s webpage, and on every one of their five-speed trucks, they have a 60 series shifter cane as far as I can tell.

I’d love for someone to be able to offer a full complement of parts needed to swap a 5 speed into a 40 series truck. But, as we have seen, it’s just not that easy due to model year variations between trucks.

There is not one stop shop, but at least a couple of parts (top cover, crossmember, shifter cane) would go a long way.

Also, transfer case shifters. Another piece of the puzzle.

I have both left and right hand drive 40 series H55 shifters if you need them @orangefj45 ...

Least I can do since you have been sitting on gears for me for a while...

Good point, but I think it all starts with the 5 speed top plate. Without it, there's no driver for making the other parts. I have no doubt the other parts can all be reproduced.
