Congrats on selling the 'Burb. Won't be long now and you'll be Cruising in style!

Don't know that 4Runner, sorry. Oh wait, looking at it again I think it may be an 80, sorry.:D

There is a car lot on Wyoming just outside the KAFB gate with an 80-series sitting out front. The name of the lot is J.W. Wheels. I looked at a 100-series there once. It's really not a functioning car lot though, more of a place where some guy parks about 5 cars at a time. You'll have to drive by to figure out how to reach the guy by phone.

Thanks guys! I'll have to cruise by the Wyoming gate and have a look at that 80.

Surprise, I just heard back from the CL dude. Truck is a 40th anniversary (whatever that means), no lockers, no HG replacement, needs tires, and has a "small valve cover leak"... probably not the truck for me, but I might go drive it. He sounds motivated.

I'm thinking that for $5k I can find a pretty nice one, either a plain one for a lower price and $$$ left over for toys or a trail-ready one... I LOVE shopping with MONEY.

AGREE! I'm working with him, but I don't think we can meet on price. That's alright, a cruiser like that is a little out of my reach anyway... I'm still looking at the black one in Reno, it looks real nice, too.

Truck is a 40th anniversary (whatever that means), .

We've got at least three 40th versions in the club; Rudy and Ash have that color (Antique Sage Metallic... beautiful color) and Daisy has a putrid green 40th. All 40th models are loaded with a lot of options, some options were only offered on the 40th. They are all 97s. They came in only the 2 colors and while the ugly green was available on any 80-series, the sage was a 40th only color. The interiors are always 2-tone leather.

The oil leak could be the oil pump cover which is a cheap fix but you'll want to do it yourself because the labor would be expensive. In fact, you should know that any vehicle with 200,000+ miles is going to need parts replaced and a Land Cruiser is no exception. Most parts are still available but they are not cheap in Chevy Suburban terms. If you cannot or will not do your own maintenance then you should be mentally prepared for some big expenses to keep any Cruiser in top condition and you will want it in top condition if you are taking it on remote roads and trails.

That looks like an OK stock vehicle. The unmolested trucks are out there but you're going to find a lot of 80s have found enthusiast owners. That's not a bad thing because (see above paragraph), most guys that wheel the vehicles will spend whatever is necessary to get them in top condition so they don't leave them stranded on the trail.

If it were me, I would get the one in Waco. That front ARB and winch will set you back $1500 to $2000 installed. Keep that in mind if you are thinking about a stock truck.

the lift will be another $1000 on top of that. it's a OME 'J' lift(3") with 'I' shocks.

On top of the $2000+ head gasket job.

Thanks. I'm new to Land Cruisers and their particular quirks, but I'm not new to Toyotas, wheeling, or doing my own rigorous maintenance. I don't enjoy fixing crap, thus my desire for simplicity, but im capable of performing most repairs and pretty strict about maintenance, especially that particular brand of maintenance that is required on high-mileage vehicles. My 89 corolla runs like a top, and I'm planning on a water pump replacement next weekend. I'll probably do the timing belt too, since I'll be in there anyway.
I also have a pretty good handle on the value of the standard TLC mods. I've looked up the various OME lifts (didn't know the Js and Is, thanks), ARB bumpers, etc.
That blue one is so well-equipped at such a great price, I know I won't find another deal like it anytime soon, but at the risk of embarrassing myself again, I'll repeat... I simply don't have enough. Sorry. I've got $5k, including travel expenses. He just won't take $4500 for that truck, and he shouldn't. I'm not being a cheap bastard. I don't have a big pile in the bank I can tap into.
I see your rides and the amount of time and money you put into them, and I wish I could do the same. I support a family of 5 on my sad government salary, go to school at night, and I'm busy every single weekend. This $5k is a one-time deal for me, and I just want to get the best camping/cruising/trail ride I can find, and IMHO that's a LC.
I want well-maintained, I want lockers, I want whatever mods I can get in the purchase, because once i buy this truck that will be it for a long time. No $1500 bumpers in my near future. If I screw this up and buy something that needs a major repair ( a chance we always take with older vehicles, I know), then I'll have a nice lawn ornament for a while.
Wow, I sound like a whiny, ungrateful SOB. But really, because of you guys I will make a much wiser purchase and end up with a better rig than I would've had I not come to this forum... I just can't quite swing the blue one, and damn that's frustrating!
I look forward to buying you all a good beer to say thanks, and I hope I can swing a good enough truck to keep up with you at least some of the way.

No worries dude, no matter which 80 you get, you'll have support. If you get a 60, you're SOL......:D

It's very good that you have a set budget, not many of us have that kind of restraint. You should be applauded for sticking to your guns.

Thanks, man! Can't take credit for the restraint, though... if I had more I would definitely spend more!

There's still a nice looking 62 for sale in Santa Fe, I wonder if pappy would approve?

Just drove this one. 201k, paint's nice for the age, BEAUTIFUL color, IMHO. (Hahaha) Drove great! It had a LOT more power than I expected after all the 'slow' comments on here. You were all correct about the driver's seat room, it's a tight fit. I wish the it went back 2 more inches! Comfortable to drive, though.
Suspicions: brand new cheapo street tires, freshly power-washed super-clean engine bay up top, plenty of grease residue and oil drips below. Some residue they couldn't get off around the valve cover. Oil was golden-fresh. Looked like the original PHH, in rough shape.
Interesting that there was a button-shaped hole where the diff selector switch should've been, and not a knockout or plastic cover. Also, the "DIFF LOCK" dummy light came in when 4LO was engaged... is that right? Plenty of clickclick when turning on pavement in 4LO (cringe).
I offered him my cash (pending an inspection by my mechanic), and he turned me down. Might be a deal for one of you, though.

2601 Menaul - watch out. That is a lot full of defect seconds.

Plan on another $2000-3000 on top of whatever you are paying for that 80.

That said, as someone with an 80 and a 60, I love the cool factor of the 60 but it is dreadfully slow for modern driving. I mainly use it around town.

The 80 is my rock crusher/expo vehicle. You will more than likely put $10,000 into any 80 that you buy for $3000-6000. That's reality if you want to play the 80 game.

Even more for the 60/62 game.

LC's are expensive any way you look at it.

Also second CDan as the baddest parts dude on the planet. That said, you will more than likely deal with Jim or Antonio. Both are very good dudes. A bit slower than Dan, but they get the job done.

Meh. Get a FZJ80. Better vehicle. Greater brain trust. Like I said ... I'm a big fan of the 3FE. But the A440F in the FJ62 lacks a cooler and usually suck. This was resolved in the FJ80.
