Wow, feeling the love! You guys are terrific, thank you all very much!

I want Greg's rig REAL bad, but I'm not being cheap. $5K is truly all I have to spend. I could donate some plasma and get a few more bucks, but that's all. I am on a tight budget. Sorry.

For the record, I sent him an e-mail. There's not a phone # in the CL ad. Anyone who can talk him into practically giving that incredible truck away for $5K as a charity case will receive my undying gratitude and a case of your choice of beverage.

Story time: Before my current 454 'burb, I had a '72 2WD Suburban with a 350/auto... it was slower than molasses in January and I LOVED it (okay I hated it, it was UUUUUGLY). I like slow, it helps me relax in traffic. No need to be first, I'll get there eventually, nice zen driving vibe, blah blah. I could also fix anything on that old heap with a $50 part from autozone. My "new" burb is actually too fast, too aggressive, and I HATE fixing some fancy little part once a month. I HAD to work on all of my vehicles when I was younger and I honestly don't enjoy it anymore. I actually pay for oil changes now (gasp). My truck is an animal off road, very powerful with no finesse, I've had it up to 13K feet in Colorado on Ophir, Engineer, Cinnamon, Yankee Boy, and part of Imogene. I go to Jemez for some mild off-roading a LOT (did you guess?), but it's not a Moab truck. It's a high-mileage POS GMC and I expect it to die any day. American CRAP, PTUI!!!

So, I want Dependability, I want Capability, I want off-road awesomeness. I don't want to work on it all the time. I want to get there. "There?" "No, (pointing much higher) ... THERE!"

In other words, I want a Toyota. Nothing else will do.

I like old, slow, and classy. I've done a ton of trolling and reading and research on the 60 and 62 series, I know about the vacuum line issues, rust issues, etc. etc. etc. I love 4runners, but I'm 6'4"/300lbs. with a wife and two kids, so, yeah, not gonna happen. I've driven one FJ60, loved loved loved it... and it had 2 cylinders at 15 lbs. compression!

All that said, I haven't considered an 80. I haven't researched them much, I actually thought they were gelded grocery-getters... and for that I am humbly corrected and I apologize. They are starting to look a little shinier to me now.

i can flip-flop on this, I'm not experienced enough to be a die-hard, stand-taking defender of any series yet... not 'til I own one.

So how about this one: https://forum.ih8mud.com/vehicles-trailers-sale-wanted/639564-96-fzj80-3xlocked.html

It is beautiful. Not nearly as pretty as Greg's dream ride, but pretty cool.

Thank you all so much, keep it coming. You seem like my kind of folks, self-reliant, informed, helpful... heck, you actually seem better than me! I love you all (except pappy, you seem kinda crusty, I just like you a lot :D).

thanks for reading my long-winded crap.

HEY!!

That's an amazing 55! 110K miles? Really? REALLY?

Sounds very cool, price is right... looks kinda crusty though.

Well, you get turned off by the 80. I'm 6"2 and it is a tight fit. My knee constantly hits the shifter and turns off the overdrive. Remember the 80 was made in Japan by midgets. But there is a mod for that. Search for the 80 seat extension over in the tech section. I bought it, but still have yet to put it in. Quite a few tall guys say it makes a difference.

The '73 is a transition year. If you are considering this FJ55 talk to me first as my FJ40 is an early '73. You will have some issues with which parts to buy. IE: '72 or '73.

You talking about the pig or me?

Oh, you'll fit right into this crowd. Pappy IS a crusty old man....yes indeed!!!

Funny. Michele said the same thing today.

Not sure if this was posted yet. There is a red FJ60 in Santa Fe posted on craigslist. It's red, 240k miles but in pretty good nic. I've seen it in person as it belongs to an old tenant of mine. Don't know much about it other than it's an original Santa Fe rig sold new here so minimal rust.

Adam,
That is a very nice truck and $2,000 cheaper than Greg's. The seller seems motivated to sell and it was in South Texas before he brought it to Waco. The seats are easy to fix; cloth covers are available or very nice leather from Zane. I would bet money it hasn't been wheeled very hard because it doesn't have sliders and you will want sliders on any wagon that wheels the trails in our part of the country.

Don't be afraid to travel for a good Cruiser. Mine came from Tucson (originally from Corrales), I think Sleepy's came from out-of-state and Shawn went to Austin for his tow truck.

IMHO, that 80 is a far better value than Greg's 60 but I'm biased. If you still want a 60 then keep sending him e-mails until he works with you on the price or he tells you to go away. Greg can be stubborn but he is moving and wants to sell it so maybe he will get reasonable on the price considering there are better equipped 80s selling for thousands cheaper than he is asking.

Shawn might beat you to that blue 80 'cause Jill spent 2 trail days in Sara's and mine and I don't think he will get her back in the 40. :D

Rudical, thanks for the heads up - 6'4" is tough to fit into a lot of vehicles. I'll have to drive an 80-series before I buy to be sure.

HJ47, I talked to Randy about his 60. He seemed to be a nice guy and was honest about the truck, it has quite a few interior/engine issues, even though it's mighty pretty. I think I'll hold out for a less leaky one, if there is such a thing.

Mike, your advice is solid as usual, thank you very much! Good eye on the sliders. Seat condition is near the bottom of my list, I agree. I'll keep bugging Greg, maybe he will take my money.
Plane ticket to Dallas - $219
Gas in a 14mpg vehicle back to Abq. - $300
Getting that blue 80 - WORTH IT!

Adam,

Come over to the dark side, we have cookies!!!!!!

Seriously, it's time for coil springs and FI baby.....check out an 80 in person and see what you think. I have to agree about the less room in the 80, it does tend to annoy me at times. The cargo area in the 60 is awesome, dragging ass - not so great!

The 80 is by no means pushing the reaches of automotive technology but at least it's somewhat more recent! Heck, the mighty 1FZ-FE is a glorified tractor motor with a decent FI system on top. It ain't very fast but it'll get you there....eventually!!

I'm not sure if an 80 technically has that much more electronics than a 62. Let's see: both have ECUs, instrument clusters, idiot lights, push button for things, turns signals, electric fuel pumps, O2 sensors, interior lights, power locks and windows. WAIT, the 80 has a cruise control, a power sunroof AND it can tell you what's wrong with it. Oh my <shaking my head>, that's a killer. I don't know if you want THAT much electronics. :flipoff2:

Just for the record, that crusty, old man actually has bun warmers in his 40. He wants an 80, just can't bear to admit it to himself or his aching back. :D

And just for the record ... the bun warmers are in the 4Runner. If it wasn't for the mileage I would be in an 80. There, I said it.
