Hi all!

Noob here, first time posting.
First, is it cool to post here? I'm not a member of HDC, but I'd like to be soon.
Second, I've got LAND CRUISER FEVER... had it for years, now I've finally saved up enough to get my first fj60 or 62. I'm looking for a nice clean truck here in NM, preferably Albuquerque. Any ideas? I'm looking in the $4-5k range.

I can't wait to drive FR70 in Jemez in my 'cruiser... Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

No problem. Just be aware that pics of your junk are required, but you won't be able to attach them until you have a few posts under your belt. You can host them at someplace like Flickr and link.

Not a good question to ask this group. Many opinions. FJ60 vs. FJ62? Get the FJ62. Other ideas? Ya, even from me. Get an FZJ80.

Thanks pappy. To clarify, I'm looking for places to shop, outside of the usual craigslist/ebay/abqjournal group. Anyone know of local dealers or shops that specialize in 'cruisers? They're very hard to find, and I don't want to drive to Denver for a rustbucket, even though I might if I have to wait too long. I don't need help deciding which series to get, I'll know the right one when I see it. I would LOVE a 62 with a 5-speed (H55?), but I can't afford it. I don't want a ton of fancy doodads and electric tushy warmers, so no 80s for me, thanks.

I definitely won't be posting any pictures of my "junk" on here (snicker), but I look forward to putting up some of my new LC... when I get one... sigh.

Lmao!! thank you! :D

Welcome! has Greg sold his 60 already? his is a ready to run rig.

good luck with finding a cruiser, and hope to see you at a meeting!

Thanks, Daisy, great advice. I don't mind waiting a few monthe for a vehicle I've been waiting for.

Thank you, Bionic. Buying a ride from somebody here would be ideal, and I'm looking forward to meeting some of you soon. None of my friends drool when they see a 'cruiser.

Get an 80 series, they don't have seat warmers. You will be saddled with a 60/62.

Reasons I want a 60:
1. Looks goooooood
2. Standard transmission
3. Crank windows (no electric clutter)
4. I like old trucks
5. Drove one, loved it. It had fahvernugen.
6. I like slow. I need slow.

Reasons I want a 62:
1. All of the above, + fuel injection

Again, I admit I'm a novice, that's why I'm here. You guys have been doing this for years, and I value your advice. I guess an 80 just doesn't appeal to me, it looks too much like my wife's Sequoia, all full of luxury and stuff I don't want. Are they superior off-road? Do they have practical advantages over the 80s models? Reasons, please.

Thanks!

We shouldn't make this an 80 vs 60 thread. If you like the 60-series then for goodness sakes, get what YOU want. The 60-series have character and a manual tranny was available. I think the 62-series were all autos but I might not have that right.

There is a reason the 80-Series are popular on 'Mud. There are a lot of them out there and ~25% have factory F&R locking axles. Probably 75% of the 'Mud 80's owners waited for one with locks. There is good after-market support for armor and accessories. IMHO, they are no harder to work on than a 60-series. All stock US spec 80s have automatic transmissions.

If Greg's red FJ60 with a Cheby V8 is still available on Craigslist then you should consider that one. It costs a lot of $$ to build one like his and that one has the H55F tranny.

Roger that, Beowulf. I definitely want a 60 or 62 and yes, all the 62s came with autos. Not too interested in an 80 (yet), I just wanted to make sure I wasn't an idiot first.

THANK YOU for posting a pic of Greg's rig, I've been drooling and moaning over that one for a couple of weeks now. Yes, it's still on CL, and it is BY FAR the coolest one I've seen locally, or anywhere near for that matter. If I had another $2K to spend I would have called him by now. Unfortunately, I'll have to settle for a lesser beast in my price range.

Thanks also for the explanation about the 80-series. Locking diff appeal makes perfect sense.

Looking forward to adding to the zany personalities.

My brother bought this one earlier this year. I wouldn't call an 80 a plush luxury vehicle; they are tough!

Welcome. :flipoff2:

Ya, even from me. Get an FZJ80.

Fixed one for you Jon! I can't believe no here has given the usual welcome. This one might be a trick, cuz if you go that route he will probably call you a sissy or old man! But like Mike said, get what you want. Another idea when making your decision is to keep an eye on the posts here and see when anyone makes runs. Someone can have an open seat for you. It doesn't hurt to ask right! Just don't expect cup holders in an 80 (and you thought they were luxury ) ! Hope you find the right Cruiser for you!

Locking diffs, one ton rear axles, full floater rear end with discs, air bags and a whole LOT less vacuum hoses to deal with in the 80 series. But, the 62 has a lot more of the classic-esque things that are appealing....for some!

Ever driven or ridden in the 80 series? Bring the Sequoia out to the stocker friendly run this Sunday and you can try mine out.

Do you have good mechanic skills? You will need them or deep pockets to pay a good mechanic if you get a 60 (I know one if you need one). The newest you could find is still 25 years old. They are getting hard to find parts for. As long as you hang around here though that is less of a problem. If you live in Bernalillo County you will be terrified of that annual emissions test. If you don't live in county, de-smog it and eliminate a lot of vacuum hoses. Better yet, swap out the motor for a V8 or a diesel. Or re-evaluate your budget and get Greg's truck. He's already taken care of the motor issues and has done a TON of work on it. You'd spend a lot more than he's asking to buy a stock version and make it the same as his. The 60 vs 80 vs 100 topic has been covered ad nauseum on MUD. Hang out in the various forums devoted to each model. Do a lot of searching. Post messages about what you're thinking but be be ready for a barrage of biased opinions and a few useful ones.

I had an '87 (FJ60) for about 6 years. It looked great. It felt like a classic Toyota 4X4. But it was a nightmare of vacuum hoses. I did a ton of work on it. My father is a Toyota mechanic so I had an expert to work on it and it still failed emissions the first time almost every year.

The darn things are gutless wonders. The tractor motors they put in them have decent torque and have no problem going 300K miles.

Just make sure you understand the pros and cons of each model before you make your decision and don't fall in love with something just because of they way it looks.

The FZJ80, in my opinion, was the pinnacle of Land Cruiser off-road prowess with its solid axles, factory locker options, decent fuel injected motor, etc. If you want to consider that route, make sure you get the '93+ or you'll be getting an FJ80 which is really just an FJ62 with the newer body style. The 3FE motor was installed from '88 - '92. FJ80 model was '90 - '92. I don't know anyone that has good stuff to say about the 3FE motor unless they've removed the fuel injection parts and mated them to a 2F motor. Toyota reduced the stroke on the 3FE motor so it could rev a little higher and get higher HP ratings out of it. It just robbed it of torque. And the transmission they mated to that 3FE motor gets no love from anyone. If you REALLY want an FJ60, consider the cost of replacing the H42(4 spd) tranny with the H55F (5-speed). It's supposed to be easy to do on '86 and '87 models due to bell housing features. Then consider the cost of desmogging the 2F motor or converting it to a "2FE" or replacing it completely.

I sold my 60 because it was too harsh on my wife because of her neck/back injuries from a car accident. I debated an 80 but opted for the 100-series because it is more cushy and I'm not a hardcore off-roader. It still is a good off-road machine, comes with a better motor than an 80, had a rear e-locker available in '98 - '99, has a more comfortable/useable 3rd row seating for the horde of cousins, scouts, friends, etc. that I regularly haul around.....

I didn't quote the statement about the vacuum nightmare on a 60 or 62. I'm a huge fan of the 3FE, just ask anybody here. I sort of own one, but mine has been fixed of most of the vacuum hoses. If you are in the county you are screwed because we smog check.

This one might be a trick, cuz if you go that route he will probably call you a sissy or old man!

No trick. I'm getting old :flipoff2:. That said, I'm the first to joke about changing the head gaskets with oil changes and that damn pesky heater hose on the 1FZ. But, looking under the hood at a 1FZ is much more pleasant than looking at a 2F or 3FE. At least you can see the engine.

Ever driven or ridden in the 80 series?

As most, of not all, 80-series owners will tell you ... drive one and you will want one. I'm sort of no exception here. See one in action in Moab, and it will be the icing. The 60/62 series are great trucks, but their butt leaves much to be desired. The aftermarket is rich for the 80-series. Plenty of quality places to clean out your wallet.

also, have you wheeled an auto transmission? I was a hard core stick shift guy. I put an auto in my FJ40(along with a bunch of other mods) and now don't want a stick for wheeling...ever. :D
