And just for the record ... the bun warmers are in the 4Runner. If it wasn't for the mileage I would be in an 80. There, I said it.

Just in case you changE your mind I'm quoting it to save it for all eternity, BAAAWWWAAHAAAAAAA!!!!

 Good for you Jon! Finally you admit to it. Now you can't give the 80's owners anymore of your bs. But now there is the question: Are you talking about the mileage on an 80 or you?

Somebody please buy that blue 80! It's located only 30 miles from where I now live, and I don't want to be tempted to buy it. ; )

Ya, but my star shines just bright enough that I can change my mind and make the quote go away :flipoff2:

I'm 6'6“, but I fit in the 81-84 40 series pretty well and the 60 series. 80 series are nice too but slow as a wet week.
I didn't know Randy's rig had so many issues. That's SW shame.

Someone just posted a '96 for $3500 today on craigslist. I'm not sure if anything what is wrong with it, but it does appear to have a missing front bumper. I can't imagine there is so much wrong that can't be done, for a reasonable amount (HG) to get it back into shape, and still have plenty of $ left over for to beef it up.

Can't find a smiley for HIJACKED... I should have never mentioned Pappy, I obviously awoke a sleeping giant.

Anyway, to get back to the point, I'm going to find an 80 to drive and make sure I fit. I'm comfortable in my daughter's 89 corolla, so I don't think it will be a big deal. Still holding out for a 60 or 62, but that blue one in Waco looks better every day. Southwest will fly me anywhere within 1,000 miles for $200. I've also had my eye on this one:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/vehicles-t...lack-cloth-interior-lockers-5500-reno-nv.html

I originally intended to shoot for a stock 60, but it looks like for my budget I can afford to wait for a nicer one with some mods, maybe an OME and a winch, if not a full exped vehicle. If I do get an 80, it will DEFINITELY be one with lockers, it doesn't make much sense to get one without.

Ali: "it's time for coil springs and FI baby" is hilarious, and point taken... but again, I like simplicity.

BUN WARMERS is a euphemism for all of the extraneous electric, electronic, and comfort items that aren't absolutely necessary to getting there and off-roading. Do I want cruise control, electric windows, power seats, etc.? Absolutely... as long as I NEVER HAVE TO FIX IT. Chances are I won't do anything but maintain my LC for the next 5 years, fancy mods aren't in the budget (boo-hoo). Otherwise, keep your BUN WARMERS. If I'm going to drive 2,000 miles with my kids, I have a Sequoia. Limited. With heated seats.

Jeeves: "Some fancy bun warmers for your hoity-toity off-road experience, sir?"
Adam: "No thanks, Jeeves! I'll take the lockers, hi-lift jack, strap, and compressor, SEE YA!"
Jeeves: "But sir, your tushy will get cold!"
Adam: " ... "

Anybody feel me here?

"But Adam, you don't understand. You need to get out on the trail with those things."

Yeah, my burb is an option-loaded SLT, I have it all, don't need it. The old '72 didn't even have an AIR CONDITIONER (GASP!) How did I survive? 2/60, BABY!

Seriously, I'm just ranting, having fun. To each their own, I say. It's what makes this country great. Well, that, plus access to Toyotas. I'll probably end up buying an 80 because those lockers sound like they would be DOMINANT on the trail, and the selection with mods seems better and more affordable...

... and hey... a sunroof sounds nice.

Thanks, slimbuddha, I saw that one. I've called and left a message. If it has lockers, I'm interested. Might be a diamond in the rough.

I actually saw that blue one. and have it saved on my favorites. the problem is getting another payment when I am looking at fixing the 40 and building project 16. I ain't making that much $.

edit- along with a F350 payment of $500.

and possibly derailing this thread in a new direction:D- Jill rides in the 40, then an 80. she says, "we need an 80!". then we get home, I find a good deal, show it to her. she asks, "how much is it?...what mileage does it get?..." and we don't get an 80 until next time we go out and the story repeats. it's really not me that's blocking this whole thing.:flipoff2:

Josh: I don't want to imply that Randy was dishonest in his ad. I think that's a fair price for what he's got. He was very quick to let me know that the interior is shot and that it has a few leaks. I appreciated him being up front about it. There's a rough blue 60 with a lot of problems that keeps popping up on Abq CL, and it's worth half of his, IMHO.

True! I was just shopping.:hhmm:

I loved my '87 4runner with nearly 190K on the clock. I told myself that I would never get rid of her until I found the 80. The 4Runner fit me better than the 80. Not good for a family though (two doors would suck with a family). Haven't owned any other one though. Its a good idea to keep your mind and options open.

At this point, I'm not ruling anything out, as long as it's a trail-capable Toyota and seats 4 people +gear. I need to fit in it and occasionally tow a small pop-up camper. My daughters would love that removeable top. Every vehicle has its pros and cons. I'm just happy to finally be shopping for one. :D

You can get a 3rd gen 4Runner for $5k if you keep your eyes open. They sell fast though. Ifs, but lockable. Some come with a rear E-locker. If you find one with the E-locker and the seller doesn't know what it is it's probably a sign it hasn't been used much off road so is in pretty good shape. Strong engine for pulling a popup etc. It's based on the Landcruiser Prado they sell overseas. If you want something to pull a trailer over 3 tons through the bush its whole life it's not for you, but as a people hauler it's great. I've had a 1st gen, a 2nd gen, a 40, an 80, an '84 pickup, a Tacoma, and I like the 3rd gen the most. Check the room inside - it's probably enough. One drawback is that it's expensive to do an SAS on - there was a guy in town who would do an sas on a first or second gen for $1,000 plus parts, but he off to browner pastures...

If you go 1st or 2nd gen stay away from the 3.0 V6 engine - It's a dog, eats gas, not really modifiable, and has dependability issues...
