The new shoes are 33X10.5X15 BFG Muds on stock wheels. Happy with the look and they drive better than the old, old, old 30" tires they replaced. The extra 3" gives the truck a more reasonable shift point in 1st and 2nd gears.

Here are the answers to the questions I always had when I was surfing for pics about lifts, paint colors, etc. Especially white 40s as this color seems to be a source of confusion and debate.

- It's a 1978 Fed Spec 40 plated in CA. It recently passed smog in SoCal. Fed spec trucks will pass if you have all the original, and working, emissions equipment, and if it's tuned correctly. If you don't have all of your emissions/smog stuff... forget it. It's probably pretty hard to find those things nowadays.
- It's repainted the original 031 White. The top is 031 White too. Many people say that the top and bezel are all supposed to be cygnus white, but that's not true for all 40s, or Cygnus white changed to a creamy color around 1978. I know that my hard top's original color was very close to 031 white. If it came from the factory in a different color, I couldn't tell the difference. The bezel came from the factory in a light grey color. I could never figure out the color code for that grey. If anyone knows how to reproduce the original grey for a bezel in and around 1978, let me know. For now, it's repainted silver.
- The lift is a 2.5" Old Man Emu with their springs, shocks, and normal shackle kit. No reversals, or anything like that.
- The truck is right about 79.5" tall measured from the ground to the highest area of the hard top. The OME leaf springs are still pretty new.
- The bezel is right-side-up.

Below are some pics from a few angles.

did you purchase it new from the dealer?

I didn't buy it new, but I am the first to take a crack at restoring it a bit. There was no indication that the paint had been touched since 1978.

White is such a classic LC color. I like the looks of the big doughnut spare too. Fine looking unit you got there.

I sure need some new MT's of that size. I'm trying to wait until the new generation MT's come out. I'm hoping they don't do away with the 10.50 version, like they did with the 9.50s.

Or I should buy now as the K3 will no doubt have a generous price bump.:bang:

Glad you posted pics... working my way toward the same end game (wheels still under construction) with my white '82 and now I can visualize what it will hopefully look like

Beautiful!

:-)

Your truck looks great! Thanks for posting the height. As you know from my thread, I was a little concerned about the truck being too tall to fit in my workplace parking garage. You've confirmed it, since my our trucks will have identical setups.

How do you like the mud terrain tires? Are they noticeably noisy on pavement?

Nader: In terms of noise, there's not a measurable difference over the general noisiness of this truck at freeway speeds. There's a different tone to the tire hum when compared to the radials that I had on prior, but is it noisier? Not in any meaningful way. The truck is already way up there in decibels when you're doing 60. I used to have BFG ATs (the old style) on a 100 series land cruiser. The KM2's don't seem much noisier than those. I know that I'm happier overall with the KM2s. They track straight on the freeway and feel nice. I've read on this forum that the 10.5" ATs on the stock steelies won't wear correctly due to the narrow wheel width. That's something else to consider and the main reason I went with the KM2s.

r083rts: Yup. I have no way to be sure, but all the evidence points to a grey (really a tanish-grey) bezel from Toyota. My truck was bone stock and relatively unmolested when I picked up 14 years ago. Nothing repainted or repaired, and when stripping it back down to metal, all that paint sure looked original.

Great looking 40, man!

It's the same as my BJ40, 031 white, built in 1978 the top and body are both 031 with a grey bezel. It is almost the same grey colour as the indicator/side light surrounds.

You don't notice how creamy white it is until you are parked beside a white car lol

there is some evidence that supports a gray-ish bezel in 1978, but it could also just be the lighting

Neat. Thanks LP. Maybe the lighting, but that does look like the original color of my bezel. Now if some helpful Mudder out there has a color code...

@fyton2v did you get the OME light or heavy? I just purchase a OME 2.5 lift as well, and was told to take out the 3rd leaf from the top in the rear springs to make the light/medium.

Be curious to see the backside of your bezel, if I remember they were not fully painted on the back.

I have a NIB bezel(in box and plastic wrap) and it's almost tan color, it's certainly to my eyes not cignus white, but maybe it is and all the ones on 40's have faded to a whiter color. The only charts showing all the body, trim colors etc, is from 1971...the only year I have ever seen such a chart

I'll post up bezel and chart latter.....gotta go kill some.bamboo.... (never ever plant that crap)
