Reminds me of something that happened to me in Lake City, CO in the summer of 2011. Spent a week in the San Juan Mountains, and I was in Lake City, having just finished driving the Engineer Pass trail. Two excited (father & son) hikers come up to me in a restaurant parking lot and asked me if I was a University of Wisconsin alumni/booster, because I had a big red "W" on the front of my truck (on the solenoid cover of my 8274). They were disappointed when I told them no, it was just a Warn winch. I guess the UW logo is similar.

I have a old 8274 all torn down and have been inspired by this thread. Is the old 8274 share the same parts with the 8274-50? Refering to the bearings and and seals mainly.

Get after it, then post pics when you are finished. It is NOT hard to do and many folks have revived/restored their 8274's for not much money.

Prior to buying my 8274 I had no working knowledge of them. Just knew I wanted one for the front of my 75 40 when I finish my frame off. When one showed up on a local CL I needed to look in to it. It was not presently mounted but was told it ran when it was removed several years ago. Told the seller I would like to hear it run so he said he would round up a battery. The night of the visit I found the winch looking used but nothing broke on the outside. When the battery was hooked all we got was click, so solenoids were possibly on the replace list. Was able to bring it home cheaper because it did not run. The surprise came when I opened it up a couple weeks later. Learned a very pricey lesson here, what I found was a gear box that had no oil and many rusted gears. The lesson here is take a Allen wrench with you when you go look at a 8274. Three screws and you can take the top cover off and see everything. After total tear down and blast I found the gears were pitted, so some strength has been comprised. I cannot justify new gears and have to much in it to not complete it and use it. Below are some pics taken when I opened it up.

The 8274 is a tough winch, but that old shaft was definitely too pitted to use.

I am looking at building one of my 8274s up to replace my xd9000i on the front of my truck.
There is a lack of info out there on breather to prevent water ingestion.
Thoughts? Info?

There is a hole where the motor attaches IIRC. Plug it? Then vent out somewhere with a tube?

i have seen guys put a breather on the gearcase and a breather on the end of the motor.
now my only problem with putting a breather in that spot is an albright solenoid was going to be mounted there.

You can fit the Albright underneath the factory Warn solenoid box. I squeezed in 1/0 cable for everything as well.

... but it was real tight fit, and if I were doing it over again I might put it on the end of the motor instead.

Which way does this shaft come out? It looks as though one side had been disturbed to keep from having the shaft migrate. but I cannot tell if it matters the direction in which the shaft is pressed out. Or can I sandblast with this gear still in place. (Maybe just tape it off good). Opinions?

But you are correct, you can clean it up very well without tearing into this section. Warm actually only sells this section completely assembled, but you can find replacement bearings fairly easily if you did want to replace them...
