My rescue and recesitation of a 71 spring green 40.

Minor update here. Just in the process of tearing down. These rusty old bolts and screws are testing my vulgar vocabulary. Got the fiberglass lid off but can’t get the large Phillips head screws out on the hatch cross bar. They are crazy tight.

Hmm. I need to try something.

Preheat with smoke wrench.

@pjohnson
An air hammer is needed with that correct? I’ve seen a few mudders mention the “shake n’ break” works unbelievably well.

Yes, requires an air hammer. More tools is always good:clap:

Now it makes perfect sense. Dunno why I couldn’t see that before.

Need some input here. I am going with the 2F and 4spd from the 77 drivetrain. I am going to mate it up to the 3spd from my rig. I have a good idea on the process and the needed parts thanks to the fine folks on this site.

But I have had a change of direction of sorts with this 40. Originally, I was just going to clean it up nicely and get the new drivetrain in and get it running. But, since then I have secured a complete 71 bumper to bumper harness from Coolerman. I want to rewire the entire 40 with this harness to eliminate problems down the road. With that being said, now I am leaning towards complete disassembly down to the frame. I want to get the frame cleaned up, rust removed, treated and painted. Then come back on with the drivetrain straight to the frame. Since I will have to take the tub off to do that it just makes sense to work it over as well. It looks like it will need very little body work. Both rocker panels have a little rust on the top middle area.

Having all that in mind, I am leaning towards dragging this project out and doing a bit more of a "frame off". Since the body is going to be off anyway, I figure I might as well fix any problem areas there are and go ahead and do the paint work. A person could easily do this other stuff and just get the tub cleaned up and go back on with it, but almost doesn't make sense seeing as how its going to be pulled off anyway.

Thoughts, guidance?

Maybe even some bitching from Old Red?

Thanks folks!

famous last words...

I recommend that you take a look at "Project Patina" by @wngrog before you head down frameoff rabbit hole... He came out with a beautiful, usable patina-ed truck without doing the frameoff nightmare that is often the end of a project (that's kind of how you ended up with this cruiser from the PO isn't it?) As an aside I will personally vouch for his rust convertor spray- it's the bees knees.

Yeah man. Look at my signature. Link
Is there.

Don’t go through all that work and put
That s***ty 3 speed back in either.

Thank you for that tip. I have started reading through that thread. Going to take me a bit as it is 56 pages.

wngrog, great thread and great 40. Man that thing looks nice. I have to admit I read the first few pages and skipped to the end to see a recent update and man that rig looks nice. I'm curious tho, where you talking about the 3spd TC or tranny? I am planning on going with the 2F and 4spd from the 77 but mating them up with the 3spd TC.

Ok cool. That’s about a $200 deal via @cruiseroutfit fir those parts. I was thinking you were using the tranny.

I’ve got 3 Cruisers I’ve spent hours under cleaning and scraping the frames, treating with rusty Converter and rolling on.

Spend your money and time getting it mechanically perfect and drive it.

The world is full of shiny cars. Cruisers with Patina tell a story.

Anyone ever have any luck with the impact driver? I’m not sure what it’s actually called but it’s the type that turns as you smack it (ever so lightly) with a hammer.

I've had good luck with the same and similar screws on my '71 FJ40 using that tool. BTW, the '71 is on the right of the photo, my '76 is on the left.
