@sogncab said I am running rich on the trails and thus my ass stinks. I was so into talking with people first morning, I didn't adjust timing or idle - suffered some going up the first climb and quickly set the timing and idle so I would wheel better at first break.

Tonight took the time to undo the Black Hills adjustment and get back to the prairie settings... final setting is 8 degrees and 800 rpm (1980 spec rpm).

And I also realized I did that last two lean-drops kinda wrong. I was taught by friend in KC with the engine build to do the final rpm set with the air/fuel mixture, not idle screw. (adjust air/fuel to max rpm, idle drop to 850, repeat until air/fuel has no impact - back rpm down to 800 via air/fuel)

Before I started the lean drop tonight, counted 6 full turns of air/fuel mixture - backed out 2, then did lean drop. I am under 4 full revolutions now vs 6. 18 HG of vac too.

Then clean some of the dust/grim off - looks worse now - need to spend big time just cleaning. But going to be the 'pro' in procrastination with that.

Coozie sticks Like magic! Honestly, I love the vacuum at 19 too

I decided it would be best to start my own thread vs blasting “What have you done…” with everything I do. I’m more comfortable to elaborate here.

This is my first LC (1980 – January 1980 build) and my first experience working on a car like this (Engineer who works behind a desk). I’ve owned this rig for about 18 months or so and some stuff has been done by me before I started this thread. Some point I will backfill the historical events. Right now, the thread will start where things sit now. Which is… parts on the ground, drying paint, reading the FSM and Forum, asking questions with others, and saying what I am seeing/thinking.

This is where I left off from the “What have you done thread…” (What have you done to your Land Cruiser this week? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/what-have-you-done-to-your-land-cruiser-this-week.255593/page-1653#post-14837903) – I have the roof off – looking at some restoration (get rid of the rust on the channel) there (and all new rubber), I am working on the steering, and the engine and possibly the carburetor are giving me issues too to address.

My intention is one day to have this as a daily driver. I’m not planning to do a frame-off – but that is just a plan, right?

Enjoy

did you chrome your front bumper?
.

On the road to @solomrus … a few years ago took roof off thinking I would tackle that. Nope, not yet- mechanical first.

And I had bad wind noise inside - especially to the Black Hills. Put this in the corners of drip rail and fiber glass top. Big difference in wind noise reduction.

The rest might be used for Rus’ HZJ73 side windows before SAS 9 convoy trip out.

Helped out at Rus's with some of the projects going on there. Took some time out to do an oil change too.

On way home, thought about some additional tweaks to the spreadsheet I have on my phone for Yellr with MPG and oil changes, etc.

Enjoyed the ride home. Started to rain near the end, so rolled up windows... so much quieter.

Well that was fun...

Started out that we were planning to go wheeling and try out Tuttle Creek in KS - My brother-in-law got a jeep and chomping at bit. But, my mom decided she wanted to do a sale of her brothers property/estate yesterday so trip was canceled. Rain, lack of traffic, etc unburdened Scott and I so we decided not raining that part of KS and 2 hours away. So we went - neither of us been there before but armed with maps.

Scott has 39" on his jeep, is wider etc. He was leading at that time and on that stretch and suddenly horse his way out of it, I really didn't think I could take his route, so I continued - (It was straddling a ravine that was articulating) - didn't take a pict of it - wish would have.

Anyway - continued for a bit looking what is what and how to get out. Well, the ravine got really wide and the narrow 40 couldn't do handle it. My left wheel slid and down I went. (looking at is all - maybe 10 more feet and would be out of the worst of it - but I wasn't)
IMG_2586.jpg

Scott came back - got my winch out to a tree - opened the hood. I have quick connect for my winch - However, being tossed like salad, the quick connect positive cable slid down under the battery tray (no pics - is went down under the frame that the tray bolts to).

Then I guess as the fender was being adjusted by the forces of gravity and dirt, it pinched off the positive line of the quick connect cable - Meaning no way to connect it - the distance was too far being clamped down. I finally managed to get out - Scott had to crawl over to hold the door open -

I ended up removing the battery, battery tray etc so I could liberate the cable and get the length back.

Did that hooked all back and started up - Scott was operating wench - I was trying to steer. but we stopped that quickly for a few reasons - 1) could see that I would just be plowing the ravine with my rig and 2) there was some electrical smell in yellr 3) the steering wheel not being power steering was difficult and near the end of the attempt - snapped back - thankfully I let got of steering wheel and to not break wrists - but I do have some bruised wrists/hands from that this morning.

need more coffee - back to this in a bit.

Oh my! So sorry for this… your explanation so far is spot on. I can visualize the experience as you describe it…sheesh!

Don't be... few things. I don't want a cars & coffee only rig. I don't want to do a Rubicon either. I want to be able to enjoy some off roading.

and as they say. "Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement."

Edit: The condition got past my rig and my capabilities extremely fast. Could have, should have all the way home last night and this am sipping coffee looking at my bruised hands.

Sorry too - this is stream of conscious typing... reader beware.

smelled electrical and winching forward not working. shut rig off.

Some motorcycle people stop and ask: "Do you need help?"
Me: "Help with what?"

Small uncomfortable laughter (at this point you have to start laughing and accept there is some damage - be glad you didn't roll it. Didn't total it. And some metal got twisted, but not much more than pride got really injured).

They guy said he saw a group of Jeep people back on the trails and he would go get them. Insert injured pride realizing that Yellr would be recovered with Jeeps.

4 or 5 showed up. And after accepting it all - had fun laughs. Turns out they were from Omaha - And they know the guy who owned Scotts Jeep - Scott was happy to find that out as he had so many question since little info came when he got it at a dealer. Focus Scott - lets get me out and you can exchange contact info.

I don't have pictures as I really wish I would have - the snatch block setup they used to great. Turns out, they did this exact thing two weeks ago with one of their own.

I don't do facebook - Scott sent me some online chatter about me...

and from the main person orchestrating the recovery.

And I will go back to this - Sam has a yellow jeep - was not a good day for yellow vehicles

Edit for spelling and grammar I saw

Yeesh brother…

Like I said, I’ve got parts for you to a degree.

Now dust off that pride and meet me and the boy in NM. We anre about to depart.

They were looking to pull me out vs go forward. Sam was looking where to attach on the back - I have a recovery shackle that goes into my hitch - forgot to put that on before we started - and had a heck of a time digging it out in the back all tipped up, got it and they got me hooked.

They asked if I could start Yellr - but at that point - nothing. Not even a click when I turned the key. No lights - well crap - thought fuse - but the origami I would need to twist to start checking fused by the driver door ain't going to happen.

So we continue since manual steering anyway - took several pulls to get me out of that area.
IMG_6734.jpg

Sam that asked about the 4Plus Yeti basket and ease of removal. Nobody has tools needed for removal of that. Sam say, we can get you out, but that might ever hold a cooler again. Well 🦆! Only way though this is to do it. Tug on.
IMG_6733.jpg

They get me out of the really wide, bad area. Another jeep comes up the trail and the thought is to just pull me back out of the whole thing as there is now way to get me out.

So they do - call out which way to turn and when to put on brakes so I don't ram the jeep.

Get out and to a flat area. Thank everyone. Jump back in, Yellr still nothing - just dead as can be. So I will get pulled up out of the overland park to the staging area in the parking lot. I notice a yellow jeep is also set to be pulled to the staging are too.

Turns out they broke both ends of the sway bar, axle shifted and the drive shaft was exposed - like a male rhino in heat kinda look.

Here is what happened to the jeep after the sway bar brackets snapped and axle shifted.
IMG_6750.jpeg

Now we are all up in the staging area - the two yellow rigs.

Start to look at it all... Here is the yeti basket....
IMG_2600.jpg

Totally survived and was a great plow saving what metal it could on my rig - Can't say enough good about @lcwizard products.

OK - on the the Passenger side. Basically fender bent, step bent up (so is the metal it attaches too - bolt just snapped right off) - the rear flare is ripped off (that was covering/masking some PO whack job to the metal that looked awful) -
