More evidence why the LX is quieter than the Land Cruiser

It also has to do with the Glass. At least on Australian models anyway. The LX has very dark windows that look like tint but are not. My friend Phil had his rear glass smashed in a bad storm and the insurance company replaced it with a Land Cruiser glass. Suffice it to say he made them remove it and put in factory Lexus glass which we have found out has a central layer of very thick laminate that not only Tints and UV filters but insulates too. Cruiseres only had an extrernal tint film put on at the dealers as an optional extra.

Is the part number possibly 67864-60020? If you look it up it appears to be the lower weather strip on the door but I'm not sure if it is the "extra seal" we're all talking about.

Has anyone confirmed this "extra seal" works and/or installed it? Or the one between the 2 doors?

There's Lexus badges for sale on EBay too....they prolly have noise cancelling effect and are worth 2dB of sound deadening, I bet. LOL.

I actually much prefer the front fascia of the Land Cruiser, but I enjoy the wood trim and super quiet insulation in my LX

Having owned both a 2006 LX and Land Cruiser I always felt the LX provided a quieter ride than the Land Cruiser but never had any proof. Recently I installed a Attic Rack in both a 2006 LX and a 2006 Land Cruiser. The LX has more insulation in the ceiling also where the Land Cruiser uses raw plastic the LX has fabric.

The Attic Rack in the Land Cruiser bolts tight against the metal body.

The LX requires a 1/2" spacer at the same mounting location to keep from damaging the fabric and insulation. You can also see the fabric at the mounting location along with the window surround.

Really interesting conversation because this could sway some buyers into getting the Lexus. We drive our cruiser 90% hwy and noise abatement is high on the list of desires. My LC isn't the quietest truck on the block and I always wondered if the LX was better in that department.

Aside from some wind noise from the previous owner's crappy windshield replacement, my LX is nearly silent at 70mph............

You bet the factory LX winshield is quieter as well as it is the acoustic windshield as well to cut down noise which LC is not equipped with, the 201 LX front side windows the same as well with double pane insulation acoustic glass to cut down noise. The 100 LX is much quieter then LC for sure, it can be achieved with LC with lots of sound mass material and sound Barrier mass vinyl insulation as well if you have the time it will be a great project and don't forget the $1k Lexus acoustic windshield too every little bit of improvement adds up and make your truck quieter.

I have to reply to this..... I have painted BMW trim before in Piano Gloss Black as we call it here. But what makes you think you can find a stain that will "stick" to plastics? That's not wood on an LX!

It is indeed wood on the LX 100 wood trim finished with polyurethane coating to protect the wood and keep it shiny. You will have to sand the polyutherane away to expose the wood so you can stain it with your color of choice. Now 80 series LX will be different, is painted wood lookalike paint.

I don't think the trim around the radio and the shifter is wood. Its just plastic.

Slow day in the office, so I am browsing rubber seals online. So it seems that there are a few types. Can someone with an LX confirm the shape and size of the extra rubber seal under the door? I know I can just go to Lexus dealer and buy this, but I do not like the local Lexus dealer (long story) and I am cheap...

While driving back from classes this evening I reached my left hand down between the door pocket and the seat and felt a good amount of cold air making its way through the door seal. It was speed-dependent so the faster I went, the more cold air got in. I believe this is a big contributing factor to the 'cold feet' epidemic that was detailed in another thread. Next time you are in your rig (LC or LX) reach down there and see what you notice in terms of cold air making its way inside. Make your passenger do the same if you have someone riding with you. This makes me even more curious to try this out and see if there is a difference. I would rather pull one off an LX at a Pick&Pull but if it comes to it I might just buy it new.

It is absolutely wood. It is sourced by Lexus from Yamaha from a renewable forest in the vicinity of Mt. Fuji.

There's also a little black trim piece that fills the panel gap between the front and rear doors on the LX, that I haven't seen on a LC. I'd also assume the this is there to reduce wind/road noise.

I'll be a guinea pig and pull the trigger on the weatherstripping to really see if it helps. So far I have those bottom 'second' seals for both the front and rear doors in my shopping cart (Lexus OEM parts). I am having trouble finding the part number for the seal between the doors you are referring to though. I've done some research in order to find the other 4 but no luck on that one. Any insight on this? If not I might just stick with the 4 bottom seals for now.

Looking more carefully in daylight, there appears to be

*The previously noted plastic trim piece on the leading edge of the rear door.
*The previous additional seal (feels like felt on plastic) on the bottom of the door.
*A plastic trim piece inside the rear of the front fender.
The usual rubber seal around the door that you see on a LC.
A second rubber seal around the door opening top/front/rear on the body (same as LC).​
