You have a lot of rust :frown:

On a more positive note. How are you liking those tires? I might pickup a lightly used set. I'm mostly concerned about road manors...since my cruiser is mostly a pavement pounder. :meh:

I know. Plasma cutter will start taking care of that this weekend I hope.

I love these tires. They have great traction in the snow and dry pavement, good traction in the wet and grab like hell offroad. They're a bit loud but not terrible. I recommend them.

Anyone have experience with rebuilding DC driveshafts?

jujst got caught up on your thread. looking good man! whats the plan for brokenparts rear bumper?

clint

Thanks man! Plan is to go over to Kevin's and start installing the bumper this Saturday.

Did a bit more research and it seems the mini DC driveshaft will bolt up to the early 60 flange pattern. I asked one of my GCLC friends measure up a shaft he has to confirm that.

By referencing the Rockford Driveline PDF link I posted above and the dimension sheet on their website, I think I have a parts listing for completely rebuilding an early 60 DC shaft. Here are the parts. They match the early 60 flange pattern and the u-joints should be the correct size.

415D - CV stud flange - RDL part number: R25-2-3142
407-0 - CV Centering repair kit
2x 407-10 - universal joint w/ c-clips

Bought a minitruck DC shaft from Mark in GCLCNY. It'll be here by tuesday and I'll have it re-worked to fit on my rig.

Got my new rear bumper installed on Saturday at Kevin Rowland's place. Thanks again Kevin, I really don't know how I'd get anything done without your help. Your plasma cutter is epic and this job would have taken 10 times longer without it. Thank you:cheers:

Took the hitch off ( anyone need one? )

Cut the bumper off. Notice how crooked my frame rails are?

Next was to chop the quarters.

Cut the rear cross member out.

Deconstruction complete
IMG_0021.JPG

Bumper wouldn't go on because frame rails were crooked. They bowed in at the bottom because I ripped the bottom of the rear crossmember out a couple of years ago and never fixed it. The weight of the truck crushed the frame in. Here is the fix:

Then the bumper slid in just fine.

It bolts to the frame using 6 1/2" bolts and 4 3/8" bolts. That sucker will never move, unless my frame comes with it.

Now I can jack up my rear axle with my fancy high lift attachment.

Painted a bit to cover up the rust and bare metal that I cut.

I think it looks pretty damn good.

Went wheeling today to test the bumper out. Took a pretty good beating, but I did bend it. More mud than anything else, but there were some pretty technical hillclimbs, descents and stair steppers. Coming down a stair stepper is where I bent the bumper.

Soupy, but I walked through it:lol:

The end to an excellent day:

Driver's side rear has developed a good wobble to it. Gotta dig in there and fix that before I move out at the end of next week. Also going to check my front bearing preloads while I've got the tools out. Anyone remember what the standard equivalent of a 54mm socket is?

Great pics, good looking bumper as well.

IIRC 2 1/8

Bumper looks good. Did you close off the bottom of the 1/4s?

Nope. I duct taped them closed before going wheeling. The duct tape held just fine until the end when we were going through some real soupy s***. Fortunately only the passenger side fell off. I'll have to get up there with a hose and then lube it up with some atf or something.

Eventually I'll pop rivet some patches in there and bedline the whole thing.

looks good man... glad to see the bumper worked out.

Thanks Zach, it's been great thus far. I gotta figure out a way to stiffen the center section to me slamming the rear bumper on various immovable objects, but other than that it's awesome.

Thats not bent. Its "clearanced".

I can hear the collective gasps as you roll into the work parking lot with that thing. How many face palms do you get? :D

Bumper looks good. I was going to say you need to cover up the holes in the qtrs but the rust would just find its way back through!

Clint

I thought about putting a steel plate in that area.... I think that would help make it more stiff and make a nice "skid" as well.

I was thinking about that. Also thinking about cutting out the center section and replacing it with some 1/4" wall 2x2" square steel with a receiver. That would be simple and strong as hell.

With all that mud, you can't tell my 80 is 5 different colors.

 Have you cleaned yours yet? I can smell the rust forming on my newly cut rockers.:crybaby:

Haha, yup. I am going to try to make it straight at some point.

When I was driving down the highway, every person that saw me driving looked and gave me a thumbs up. I thought it was hilarious.

For the quarters, kevin had a great idea. I'm going to get some sheet metal and form it to fit in the bottom of the rocker with lips going up the fender on the inside of each side. I'll drill holes, pop rivet the patches in, seal it with body caulk and coat the s*** out of it with bedliner. It would have the "industrial" look:lol:

Thanks for the compliments guys! Getting closer and closer to where I want Moonshine to be.
