So what you're really saying is you'll be making transmission and transfer case adapters on the cheap right? :D

JB Conversions spud shaft. I agree, I will be ordering two.

I want to talk to them about whether or not this neck-down was planned or if it was a mistake. I also want to know if I've put too much power through the spud shaft, or if the spud shaft prematurely failed.

I know I've said this already, but I'm depressed that this is the weak point and not my 1310 u-joints. The u-joints are significantly smaller than factory LC joints on purpose. It's much easier to replace a driveshaft, or an output yoke (like last year) than it is to replace a spud shaft.

Along those lines, do you think it's possible that last year's rear output yoke failure somehow caused this spud shaft to weaken?
I agree on having ujoints as the weak link. Quick, simple, and cheap to fix. I put a mini truck shaft in mine which has smaller ujoints. Also the joints move to 45 degrees which is much more than the stock cruiser joints.

You should have a bench vise on the inside of the frame for easy u-joint replacement. That would be cool!

I often thought of running brass bolts in my driveshaft.

This is my point. I planned to use u-joints as the weak link, but everything else keeps breaking first!! 1310 u-joints are supposed to be weak!

Why brass bolts? Why not weaker joints?

Looks like I've found a JB Conversions spud/input shaft in Durham. Trying to see if I can get it here by tomorrow.

Ugh. I hate custom parts.

Because changing the bolts is even easier than u-joints.

Although I'd be worried about the driveshaft going through the floor or worse a bystander...

I guess having them on the transfer flange would be fine and keep strong ones on the diff, if they broke at the diff and you stay on the throttle a little longer I could see it turning into a propeller.

Having your driveshaft come loose is never a good thing. Happened to me last year at Rausch and put a good dent in my floor and muffler. I guess if you're engineering any kind of driveshaft failure, joint or fastener, then that's a risk.

So would it be "smarter" to have it fail at the transfer case rather than the diff?

Just cut some relief cuts in your axle shafts, thats what i do and it works awesome! Sliding out that ff axle must be easier than droppin the case lol.

D

why not just run aluminum bolts instead of hub studs and just carry a charged drill, extractors and a bunch of spares?! :)

The real fix is to have stuff not break. It's my driving style that needs to change.

Very few men will admit this. Respect.

When i see people getting screwed trying to help someone i cringe. Guy i know just blew up his cherokee transfer case pulling a guy he didnt know out of mud he shouldnt have been in. Ive seen guys burn out their winches tryin to be heroes and for what? You cant really expect the guy to fix your truck when all is said and done....

Dont get me wrong ill pull you out but im not gonna break my junk to do it. Id rather bust out the hilift and shovel and work for ten minutes then winch or pull whoever out. Usually that helps quite a bit and in the end your van survives.

Well put D. I've been lucky in the past ripping people out of the sand. Guess it was too much this time.

Got the case back together this weekend. Moonshine is back in action, albeit with a gear oil leak from the case  I'm super pissed. Hopefully I can fix the leak without dropping the case again. Need to take a closer look to see where it's coming from, but it appears to be coming from the front half of the case. This is a new leak that was not there before.

Ghetto string will be replaced with a proper tie-down when I build a skid plate.

Furthermore, if it's a leak from the front of the case and not the mating surface between trans and transfer, then it's not a seal I touched.

It never ends :(

If it looks like I may screw up my own stuff, I just let them use me as an anchor point. A couple of weekends ago a novice wheeler was stuck in a bunch of rocks with their 80 series. They wanted me to tug him out in my 40. Have you ever tried to tug out a novice wheeler? Its not pretty. I had him hook up his own winch to me and put a jacket over the cable. My 40 began to slide, I had to instruct the 80 owner he had to drive as he winched. It was a good test for my new 4wheel disc set up and pintle hitch lol. But pretty low risk for me breaking anything. Ended up being a good learning experience for the guy and good adventure.

Well it looks like a false alarm on the oil leak. Looked at the front of the case at lunch and couldn't see any leaks above the inspection cover. I then remembered that I used hylomar to seal the inspection cover and neglected to use a gasket. Drained the case, cleaned the mating surfaces and installed the gasket with hylomar on both sides during lunch today. Should be fixed now.

*phew*

I love the string and think it should stay.

It's a skid string under the t-case!
