Oil drained and changed, new filters, fuses done today. It was great!

Stop wearing white shirts when you work on your rig...

Being how you're a girl and all, it would help keep your finger nails clean if you wore latex of nitrile gloves when you change the oil. That dirty old stuff will run under your nails all the way up to your cuticles. It will take a month to grow out.

All the cool mechanics wear them.

What is the red light on the dash panel mean?

unless someone wired it differently, that should be your right hand blinker indicator

in my truck it's green, but yours is a year earlier

Helped Monniepoo yesterday on her 40. Well in reality she wanted to and did all the work :) i just handed her the tools. i did help loosen things that were manly man torqued on.
thought i would write some things so you guys could chime in on. I don't know much about 40's I have owed one for about two months so what i have learned i have learned here on MUD. this site is the ****... i mean unbelievably helpful.
things i noticed:
1-as you guys noticed the steering arm is bent and the steering box is or was leaking, not much fluid in it now if any.
2- fuse panel has 5 fuses but my manual says it should have six fuses. it was pretty dirty and corroded. cleaned it up a little got it working better. no lights worked still though anywhere. PO had 25amp fuses installed in all of them we changed them to 15amp to see if anything would blow and it didn't. also PO did a lot of different wiring. couldn't read the manual :) to small of print
3- I noticed the T-case leaking from the aft seal or drive shaft where the parking break is. didn't really investigate down there to much. in retrospect we should of removed the skid plate (which is nice) and took some pics for you guys to help with. next time i guess.
there a few other things but those are the majors I think for now.
all in all its a good 40 (13700 + miles only) i think a weekend and parts (and beer) y'all could make it a reliable DD

Seems like typical problems. I think my 1970 had all the same when I got it. I had to remove a few shims from my steering box to tighten up the slop and used grease rather than oil since mine also leaked. Opinions vary on that, but it's worked fine for me. My advice is to start saving for a FJ60 power steering conversion.

I didn't replace my entire wiring harness but did have to run some new wires. I would say 50% of my problems were caused by bad grounds. Definitely helps to have a multimeter.

If the t-case is leaking you might also need to rebuild the parking break. Needs to be taken apart to replace the rear seal anyway. That was one of the first things I did on my 40. My front axle was also leaking oil into the front brakes so had to rebuild the knuckles. That's definitely a bigger job, but something to check.

Replace the wiring harness. Not hard, not expensive, and you'll know everything about why something electrical works ( or doesn't).

Yes, anything electrical is a mystery to me...better to leave it up to the pros. I got nervous looking at the wiring schematic.

Kind of the "what did I get myself into" nervous.

X2 on the grease - I ran oil for a while but then realized the wisdom of the POs in using grease: no more leaks :hillbilly:

it's not that difficult, you will learn quickly

often it is easier to just repair - replacing the entire harness is a MAJOR undertaking - BTDT
