First I have to say I had nothing to do with any of this other then compiling it. If your bolts shear off thank somebody else.

It seems folks often have questions about proper torque settings for various items on their 40’s. I figured as an ex-helicopter mechanic, I would do something that may be useful while I drink my beers.

First I searched Mud for torques and found about 75 posts and weeded through them for good ones and applicable ones. This is what I found:

“There's a generic torque table, by bolt size, in the back of the FSM.”

“Torque specs are [usually] determined by the bolt used, not the application. You should be able to find standard specs for each size, grade and the tread pitch, both SAE and metric by searching the internet. Although popular, OP never uses Locktite but prefers Never-Seize. It makes the bolts come apart easier later and it is water proof when used in the wet spots. OP uses NEW lockwashers: split-ring, highcollar, I/O stars, etc. OP used to have an old engineering manual that said those are not designed for multiple uses, so considering the cost, OP tries to always replace them. [sic]” Sound advice on the washers as an ex-aircraft mechanic.

“…verify that the threaded holes are free of dirt, grease and or oil and install these bolts using blue Locktite…”

Now for the miscellaneous posts (I left out the names and cleaned them up to protect the innocent):

It is late on the East Coast so when I have an opportunity I will be glad to load the FSM Torque Specs as well as the Generic Torque Specs listed in the back of the FSM and else where.

HAVE ANY RELIABLE LINKS TO TORQUE SPECS???? LINK 'EM HERE!

If you want to list a "Gutentite" please advise it is such and not FSM or other manual. Also - site your reference in case folks have questions.

And for now, :cheers:

Awesome...Thanks for taking the time to do this...

I am confused as to why you would want to tighten your shackle pins to 30 ft-lbs? I thought that was a sure way to kill flex was to over-tighten the shackle bolts?
My only possible reply is that is what the FSM said. I didn't make anything up - just assembled the info into one easy to find place :shrug: I know some folks say even just go hand tight on those. If you check you will find some specs different in the various manuals. :shrug: x2:cheers:

Torque Adapters

How to compute torque
If an adapter is attached to the square drive of a torque wrench, the wrench will not give the actual torque indicated by the setting of the handle. A simple formula however, allows you to figure out what the setting should be to deliver a pre-determined amount of torque at the end of any adapter to the fastener.

Here is the formula:
equation.jpg

The letters in the formula have the following meaning.

A = length of torque wrench
B = length of adapter
C = torque wrench setting
D = desired torque at end of extension

The adapter is situated as below:

wrench1.jpg

VERY HANDY HINT
If you attach a torque adapter at 90 degrees to your torque wrench, your torque setting remains the same as without the adapter.
