After 2 years of rebuilding my fj62, last night while driving back home it started to just shake bad. luckily it all happen when I was a couple blocks from home. After parking it all the thick white smoke coming out of tail pipe. So that usually intels head gaskets or cracked engine block or head. Will see when it gets fully inspected. But if it needs a whole new engine I don’t think I will dump money like anymore. I will part it out at that point.

agreed, have you seen the prices on Bring a trailer for 62 series? Probably just a head gasket. Fix it and sell if you are done with the rig, but parting would be a huge financial mistake. Parting vehicles sucks.

My guess: It’s not a crack in either the block (it’s definitely not a cracked block) or the head.
A crack in the head can lead to loss of compression and eventual coolant loss but a crack is something that slowly develops bit by bit.
It typically doesn’t manifest as a sudden engine malfunction with violent shaking.
Also a crack in the head (if one were to develop) would usually be located in one combustion chamber - definitely not spanning two.

I can say from experience, that if one cylinder has zero compression, either from a warped burned exhaust valve or a big ass crack, you wouldn’t even know it when driving. Engine power feels almost the same and the engine still runs smooth (but doesn’t idle quite as smooth- but still idles fine.

A breeched head gasket on the other hand is going to connect two cylinders together at the break, and that is too much for the engine to handle. In that case, you’d get the symptoms described: major loss of power and poor running, along with a lot of coolant possibly getting into the exhaust pipe - making a big cloud of steam out the back.

My guess: Head gasket failure

(Of course I could be wrong about that, but that’s my guess)

Part of this is just the crap shoot of old vehicles. So, take a deep breath, relax, and learn what's wrong. The report back here for the finest advice you'll get anywhere.

Don't give up, I'm sure as the others said it only may be a head gasket.
take your time and diagnose it. lots of help here.

I would buy it as is to work on it. I have a 62 and am looking for another 60 eventually. Its an easy fix though so you are much better off getting it fixed.

Sell it as is or fix it. You've only posted one photo and if it is representative of the overall condition of the 62 it should not be parted out. Parting out a Cruiser works like this:

20% of the parts are highly desirable and will sell quickly. You'll also be inundated with messages about these parts.
50% will sell but not as quickly and you may have to lower prices to move them
30% will be in the almost never sell to never sell category and 25 years from now you'll still have parts sitting around.

Part out? Don’t let pitiful emotions run your mind a muck! Truck is way to clean to be a part out, I see this as a excuse to put in a 1HZ. Good luck!

I wish I could put in a diesel engine in it, but I live in california and doesn’t let us do anything.

Move out from Kalifornia, and do what you want.

Just start pulling wrenches… I personally enjoy working on my cruiser 70% of the time, the other 30% is spent crying at my part-time job.

It's difficult but not impossible, in Los Angeles, to get a diesel repower. Depends on what you choose.

You're in the West SFV ?

You need to do some diagnostics before throwing in the towel ...
