Easy way to get them off and on? Thanks for the reminder, it was on my mind but easy to slip.

That's how I know!!!!! I forgot to do it and I decided I will live with an ABS light and no ABS for four years until I have to dig in and repack my wheel bearings. Then I'll pull them and install. And I was being SSSOOOOO careful to make sure I didn't jack up the sensor of bend the wire and all that. I got it all back together and the ABS light wouldn't go off. I sent Christo a message and and asked where I should start looking and that was the FIRST thing he asked. I cannot BELIEVE I didn't swap them over. That's what I get for getting too excited to get it back together!

Many people ask for one grease to do the front end so that they don't have to deal with a wheel bearing grease and a moly birf grease. Well I am going to try Redline CV2 to do everything... Looking at the datasheets and test results it out performs both. So I guess we will see.

I like and I think it is awfully funny in the way Chisto presents his "hey dummy did you check that" kind of way. Not that he actually thinks people are dummies but that to him it seems like the first most obvious answer and to people that might do it once every 5 years, it's not always that apparent. lol.

Gotta say, I felt pretty stupid when I looked at my pics and there it was. Hell, I have the old Birf sitting on my DESK and I'm looking at the ring right now!

I've done so many front axle rebuilds on various makes, (but mostly pre-ABS) that I didn't think about it. When I did the ones on my Jeep, it came with the rings already installed.

Definitely had to slap the forehead on THAT one. It made my 15 YO son laugh at me for making such a huge mistake. If I was doing this for someone else, or if it was my wife's DD, I would have fixed it immediately. (after I got a new set of gaskets in.....)

New studs are longer and have a torx type head much easier to install (with some blue Loctite) than the old studs double nutting. if you don't have the torx tool a 6 point 11/32nds will work in a pinch

Just ordered 4 tubes...I saw they also sell 75-90 gear oil as well. Any thoughts/research on that product?

I use Mobil 1 75-90 in the diffs and transfercase, their product is probably quite good, but Mobil 1 is easy to find and has worked well. I just drained the front after about 12,000 miles maybe a little less and it was remarkably clean and in good shape.

New birfs showed up they look pretty good, I don't think they are as good as the old Bobby supersets but I thought RCV made them for Bobby?? A little confused there.

They are not nickel chrome coated like the version I used in my 55. The splines are definitely cut and not rolled, and they don't use Mobil 1 synthetic like Bobby used in his joints. Not sure if I am going to go through the hassle of breaking the joints apart and cleaning them to run the CV2 or run them as they are. All in all good but not outstanding in my opinion. Actually a little pissed at the cut corners. Guess that is what made Bobby a Legend.

So if anyone is curious what makes a 30/30 different from a stock setup I took some measurements.

Stock major diameter short side 1.250
Stock minor diameter short side 1.160
Stock major diameter long side 1.260
Stock minor diameter long side 1.160

RCV major diameter short side 1.280
RCV minor diameter 1.260 (big difference)
RCV major diameter long side 1.285
RCV minor diameter long side 1.260 (big difference)

So the difference is really only about 1/10" thicker shaft after the sealing surface going into the birf. The rest of the differences in size are quite small. The long side shaft is about 25/100" larger not a lot of extra meat. Most of the benefit should be in the material but I can't find the material listed on RCV's site. I assumed 4340 body and 300M star, but my assumption might bite me in the ass I will call them Monday.

Did they come with both snap ring grooves?

Yes they do have both the snap ring grooves in the birf.

It is pretty easy to knock them off with a brass hammer and drift, really the hits aren't that hard. You will get a tiny bit of deformation on the teeth, I was going to hit them with a jewler's file but I really don't think it will hurt anything.

Just a little more trivial/anecdotal information since I don't think a lot of these 80 series 30/30's are out there. They do have the dual snap ring grooves and on the 30 spline birfield side of the shaft they appear to use a stock retaining C clip just bent open wider.

And just got off the phone with John at RCV, really nice guy.

He said things completely changed when Longfield was sold to Trailready. Traillready is already out shopping the design around to be made overseas at a cheaper price point.

Additionally for their products they do not spec out the nickel chrome plating like Bobby Longfield did when he sold the 80 Super Sets, but they have not seen a problem without it as it is really just for corrosion resistance and everything is bathed in grease or oil. It is a $100 option if you want it though.

Also even though the website doesn't list the materials they are 4340 bell and shafts and the inner star is 300M.

I asked about the grease, he says it is an in house grease that they have made, it is a full synthetic with high Moly values. He didn't know what the base was so I think it is still safer rather than sorry to pull them apart and regrease them with what ever grease you are going to use to avoid contamination and possible incompatibility between the two.
