Looks about the same as mine did (also had next to no maintenance before me). My cooling system was not as bad as that but the PO did mix and it took me 3 flushes to get it clean (er).
I have heard a good way to flush a system is to use vinegar and run it for an hour or so then flush twice with water and bit of baking soda. I have not tried it myself and i would research it before trying it.
The cam area of your head looks good, mine was black with burnt oil.

It is funny I think the PO did a good job with synthetic oil changes and actually had a little book in the glove box for oil changes and tire rotations, but the cooling system was totally neglected. I am hoping to talk EMS into flushing the motor through the top heater hoses when the head comes back from the machine shop and it is back on, but before we hook up the new radiator, and then I will do a chemical flush and let it really work then flush it through the block.

All the heater lines are being replaced and the rear heater is being deleted.

I just rebuilt my motor last year and used Cometic MLS head gasket, ARP head studs, already welded a bung onto the oil pan....I'm just waiting to do it right. Money is ready too, i just need some direction.

I think that the turbo is really great but for my intended purpose I think I am going to pass....
This isn't my only car, and the way I use the LX I am not sure about the added complexity, added heat, the fact that if I need to work on the motor a lot of the turbo components will need to be removed, etc.
I am going to do a header, full exhaust, and possibly Landtank's MAF, and dyno each one and give you reports of the power increases.

Sounds good! Give the guys at EMS Powered a call they have done a lot of research in this area and should be able to basically give you a turbo kit.

I was just jabbing at you since you always take your projects past the next level! I just thought it was not character of you to back down from the turbo.

Haha! Yeah trust me, I deliberated long and hard about the turbo. I am a huge turbo fan, I think maybe I will just be getting my turbo fix on the 1uzfe.

So went up to take a look at things. I think the block is actually in really good shape and will clean up great! The head is also in good shape and we are just going to have it sent to the machine shop as insurance, valve seats, etc.
While I was there I was curious how bad my stock radiator was since is looked fine just looking in the cap, or hose necks so we put it up on the bandsaw and started with first cutting the bottom tank off.

Now the upper tank.....
Yeah that is a problem! Probably 20-30% of the upper fins were clogged, not to mention how many were open on top but clogged somewhere inside. Can't always judge a radiator by looking through its cap.

The head work was all done by a local shop that EMS Powered uses, I was going to farm it out, but I trust them to work with shops they are comfortable with. Not to mention if they have a working relationship with the shop it is more likely that they can get them back in a decent amount of time. I am trying not to be a difficult customer, something I might have been called in the past. ha!
Do you know the shop?
Im thinking about getting a used 1fz, having it freshened/gone thru(in prep for turbo) and then swap it into my truck. I really want to go the turbo route next year but it would be foolish to put it on my 216k mile current motor . I figure by having a second motor done I can swap them over a long weekend. Then sell my used motor for about what I spend for a used motor.
I dont mind dragging a motor to Austin if the shop has experience with and knows 1fzs.
