Yeah I think this is kind of a flip the coin debate. For me I was pushed over the edge when I saw a puddle under the truck and it could have been the back of the headgasket or the rear heater lines, either way the easiest way to get to them was to pull the head, and while I was there have EMS clean everything up.
I am not going to lie, now that I see the condition of the head, the headgasket and the block, I am really glad I just did it. I was able to do it on my terms, not rushed, not stranded along the side of the road in some small town trying to figure out how to handle it.
To each their own, but if you see any issues I would just do it, you get good peace of mind and if you do it before a catastrophic failure you can avoid any head warpage, blown radiator, etc.

Don't get sucked in! Put the money away for when you actually need it.
