Killer man, would love a ride in this thing
If you are ever up in New England, shoot me a message! Better yet, bring your rig and we can wheel too!

With almost 100 miles on it so far and everything seems to be working correctly. The PDI box dressed up the engine bay a little. I like how it looks:

That looks great, I want one so bad!

So, any notable differences between the old and new Gturbo's?

My 2 were very similar, but had a few minor differences in appearance, but the 1st one was much louder and whistled hard, and the new one is very quiet, and I don't think hits quite as hard as the original while it lasted (maybe related?).

Your original Gturbo was MUCH older than the new one, so I'm curious to hear your observations.

My new one has a black wastegate as well, while the 1st one and the replacement wastegate they sent me were shiny metal finish, so there was a revision of some sort. Both had green impeller wheels, and the housings all looked the same.

Wow, my experience is almost identical to yours. My new turbo is almost silent and my old one had a (satisfying) turbo whistle to it. Also, when boost hit on my old one, it hit almost all at once and it felt like it hit hard. My new one gets into boost much earlier and gives me power in partial boost way better than the old one. But, at max boost, the old one felt a tad perkier than the new one. That's why I'm considering turning the boost up just a bit... maybe 24 psi. I wonder if they changed springs in the wastegate... maybe to a spring that has more of a progressive spring rate? (maybe the older version was more linear?)

What boost are you running right now? Long term would you see bumping boost up to 24psi to be an issue? (it seems higher than most folks run on here)

I wonder what the HP/TQ gains are from stock with you essentially being full bolt-on now.
Here's the table that Gturbo lists. I would bet my rig is on the low end of the spectrum for a Grunter. Still, it feels like night and day difference. I can easily cruise at 80 mph and don't slow down on hills. Towing my 5000 lb boat/trailer seemed natural as well. Back when I got the cruiser, my EGTs were higher than they are now and every hill felt like I had to almost floor it to keep speed. Another benefit now is that I can take hills using only 10psi of boost and keep speed. There is a lot more usable power in there.

After looking at that table, I'd guess maybe I'm making 200 hp and 400-450 ft lbs of torque. @IanB does that seem right to you?

I'm currently running 20-22psi, probably the max I should be without an intercooler. You do have an intercooler, I would have no reservations about running 24psi on your setup.

I tell myself that I'll bump up the boost after Vermont Overland. But, I'll have my wrenches with me. So, we'll see how that ends up...

So, it was our big day. The day to see if all the turbo work... worked. So, naturally, I got side tracked and installed @Outsane 's shaky mirror fix. Lucky for me, it was every bit as easy as people say.

After that, we loaded the cruiser... as if we were on an expedition to Tierra Del Fuego. Hey, I've got two kids... no judging!

I also snapped a last clean pic of the cruiser. I was secretly satisfied when I realized that it eclipsed Wifey's Lexus behind it.

We drove to Vermont and it drove really well. In fact EGTs seemed to be down across the board and boost response was better. Once we got into town, we stopped at the general store. This store specialized in it's butcher shop (amazing meatballs, sausage, crazy burgers in addition to high quality cuts) as well as its gun store (Sig Sauer everything along with bear tags). They had great beer and boot departments as well.

Finally, we hit dirt and got to the cabin. Everything went smoothly and I'm hanging out in front of a nice fire as I type. I'll post a real trip report when I get back but I figures a little turbo success was worth sharing.

Haha you’re not overpacked you still have the 3rd row seats installed! Great work!

Why would those 3rd row seats not have come out and went straight into storage when you 1st got that truck back home after purchasing?!? I mean, unless you use them, they are a complete waste of space back there and dead weight.

I'm one of the few that actually uses them. When friends or family visit, we put the kiddos in the 3rd row, allowing the adults to sit in the first two rows. When we take people up to the cabin, we only take 1 rig and I can look at my wife and say "I told you the Cruiser was going to be practical!" And, she is always forced to say yes!

So, just got back from the Vermont Overland Birdwatching Safari yesterday afternoon. I thought I'd share a little more on the trip. On the way out we some some deer, turkeys and a black bear cub. He ran across the road right in front of us! (couldn't grab a picture) When we arrived, we dropped our stuff off at the cabin we rented.

It was a nice little spot... the same one we rented last year. This time I met the owner... he like the Land Cruiser a lot.

He also suggested that we check out the local general store, Singletons. I shared the picture above but had to talk more about this cool store. When we got to the store, I could see why he liked it so much. The place was so cool... I wish I took pictures inside. When you walk in, it looks like a grocery store on the left, but everything is local made stuff. It wasn't presented in a hipster way though. It was just stuff they carried. On the right was a liquor store with lots of local made stuff. (they had a huge VT craft beer section) Straight ahead was the gun store. They were a Sig Sauer distributor and had a big selection of those. They were running a special on bear tags along with a gun purchase... I'd never seen that before. Following that theme, all along the top of the walls were antique guns... mainly rifles. They varied in make, model, action, caliber and vintage. Along side were displayed historic hunting pictures, many of which seemed to span from the late 1800s to the 1930s. (judging by a few of the "deer on the hood of my car" pictures.) Behind the gun store was the clothing store. Everything was quality stuff. Some brands were recognizable, while others were local. To the left was the famous Singleton's deli. The meats were all local made. They were famous for their bacon and pepperoni. Long story short, we bought lots of "provisions" and enjoyed exploring the store.

But how did the truck run?!?

Man, the truck ran awesome. Spool came in earlier, EGTs were a little cooler, power was up. I still haven't turned the boost up but I might do that today. Also, the new intake had a place for the vent hose of the head. So, we routed the hose, post intake filter, into the intake stream. I want to either get a catch can or just vent that down to the frame again.

The next morning, we arrived at the venue. For those who aren't familiar, this even is hosted by a guy by the name of Peter Vollers. He is a 4wd advocate in Vermont and hosts the event on his historic farm. The location is beautiful and he let's attendees camp almost anywhere they want. He even set aside a forested area of his property for attendees to cut new trails in!

I arrived shortly after registration opened at 9am and there were already quite a few people there:

After checking in, I went down by the creek to meet up with other folks from my local club, Exploring New Hampshire. (the club forum owner was a sponsor of the event)

After helping get the local campsite set up, we got together and mapped out some routes that we were going to travel over the next few days. All the routes involve Vermont Class 4 roads, which are unmaintained public road ways. We chose routes that would challenge the vehicles we had on hand. We had a lot of JKs, a few TJs, my 80, a few Tacomas and a CJ. Most were locked front and rear on 35s but a few were on 33s. The 1st gen Tacoma ( @rcracin ) was open/open... so he was the most adventurous in the group, in my opinion.

The next day, it was time to get to business. We started out and hit a harder section of trail right away. As usual, the photos don't do the trail justice, but it was situated on a decent side hill. There were rocks large enough that lockers were needed. Rcracin got to use his max tracks for the first time.

My buddy Rob got a CJ together for this event and this was the first time it saw any dirt. So, this was an exciting trail for him as well

After the first section, the sidehills were done but there was plenty more rock work to get in! Because we were in a lower lying area, there were pleny of creeks and small water crossings as well. So, our tires were wet all day.

We ended up splitting into 2 groups. My group went down through some rocky creek beds in a lower lying area. The other group ended up on an obstacle called "The Crack". One Jeep flopped going down, and required a recovery. (The next day, a Tacoma flopped at the same spot, but in the evening. They had to leave the truck over night and recover it the next day.)
