Time has come to consider new Tcase and while I’m at it. Might as well think about 5 speed

But looking for full service. Too old to mess around with rounding up parts. Shafts and muscling removal and installs

So.., anyone have a recommendation on any mud vendors that you had do this wrok

1978 pretty much stock drivetrain now
 
The NV4500 has a .73 5th gear reduction which might be too much for a stk 6 cyldr. I run a NV4500 with my sbc and love it.
There are several vendors that sell a Toyota h55f 5 speed with a stk split tcase with a friendlier 5th gear. I think Georg a Valley Hybrids offers and installs them. I'd suggest using the search function to look for more info. I'm sure there are other vendors.

Yes. They are. But haven’t seen poser here in a while. Kind of looked for his vendor stuff here
 
H55 is the closest bolt in...

1. Cut and weld up tunnel to fit the top cover & tcase shifter
2. Buy OEM adapter to fit parking brake drum to splitcase
3. Buy splitcase
4. Relocate the torque tube to accomodate the parking brake drum
5. Notch bellhousing for H55 (easy)
6. Perform maintenance while doing trans swap
7. Driveshaft length modifications

Slight variation;
1. Locate H55 lid for 40, mod the floor slightly differently and utilize factory floormat
2. Mix match parts to fit tcase lever to factory opening
3. Get a 80+ rear axle and use the parking brake on axle with splitcase.
4. Modify factory parking brake cable to combine factory handbrake lever to the rear axle OR use 70 series parking brake lever assembly and adapt to rear axle.

Nothing will bolt in and fit, you're going to be paying in the upwards of 7k or more to fit it all including purchase of tcase/trans. Why do you need a 5speed? Are you usually going 70 and want to drop RPMs for long distance driving? It's a lot of work for minimal gain....most folks find 33s get around most of the desire for reducing RPM at highway speed.....unless you're in Texas.

My tcase leaks, drain hole is FUBaR, grinding and shot, so to also reduce some noise while driving faster…. As it were .. and while I’m at it …. But you make good points.

Rebuild the tcase, fix the drain plug or swap a good case in, put skinny 35s on... :)

Or you can buy my spare H55 lid for a 40 in preparation ;)

@eaj71 - I've been mulling this too - should compare notes - been talking to Georg too - with quotes kind of thing -

Reasons to do it?
  • lower rpm driving faster (us in the prairies have distance to cover).
  • Quieter - not out to make an FJ40 what it is not - split tcase is stronger (I can't confirm, just multiple threads speak to that) but a little bit of RPM makes a big difference on the interstate.

Reasons not to -
  • $$ -
  • you can't get thought an intersection from a stop before you have to shift (IE not the best in City - the TC where they have not figured out how to time the lights, even worse. (Thought I am also considering moving back to TC too -

the 7k is light IMO -
  • parts to move parking brake to rear axle is 800-1K,
  • if you have a split case with the oil provision for 5 speed, cheaper to refresh that vs buy the shiny ones you can buy too I found out. I have a query out to a parts guy in IA for a split Tcase and other parts - Tarnow said he has several, just no email back on price.
  • pay for labor
  • get the cross member to hold tranny/tcase - not bad just something else for the list.
  • Top plate is nice too - Nates OEM and Georg has someone who makes them too.
I haven't seen any activity when I drive though Farmington on my way to see my son. Would be awesome if Steve still takes stuff on. If you don't want to do work, there is a guy in Omaha I go to when I know I'm over my head or traveling too much for work. He only does Toyota LC.

Lastly, I read that a split case with the old H42 is a stronger Tcase combo that is also quieter. I don't know if that mandates shaft adjustment but certainly does require the parking brake. I might go this route if I don't jump all in - split case with my current H42.

Awesome write up. My thoughts exactly on the noise drop and every bit helps

That lower 1st gear might be fun at the same time. My T case is NOT split and shot. so that too is another plus to do it

I’ll have my FJ40 for another decade I think so looking to upgrade when I can.

I was at the BHCC a few years ago and a couple from MN had a 40 with an H55, said they loved it and Steve did the work
