Hey hey πŸ‘‹!
It’s been a couple days since we’ve hashed out on this. One piece of the Hydroboost puzzle that hasn’t seen much coverage is the steering pump.
I picked up a complete setup from a salvage yard that included the factory teardrop Saginaw P-style pump with two return ports. As some of you might know, the factory PS pump placement on a β€œgarden variety” LM7 LS engine makes for a tight fit on the frame rail, especially in conjunction with a retrofitted PS box like a 60/80 series or Scout. There’s another style of steering pump and that’s the Saginaw Type II, which is a more compact unit used with a remote reservoir. What I’m not sure about yet is if the mounting bolt patterns are the same.(?)
On the PSC website you can get either for a hydroboost application, but for some reason, they give you a list of choices for pulleys in the Type II (ranging in diameters from 6” down to 4.5”), and no pulley choices for the P-Pump. I can think of a couple advantages of having a smaller than OEM pulley -
a. More clearance between the frame for fitting into an FJ55
b. More pressure at idle with the increased pulley speed (?)

Some digging has revealed a couple small things. The Type II pumps don’t bolt to factory LM7, LQ4, or LQ9 ps mounts. A writer whose article I found claims that type II’s flow less volume and therefore create less heat and parasitic drag. How that translates to a 4wd rig on 33”+ tires? IDK.
There is a bolt-on adapter made by Turn One Steering to run the Type II on a P-pump factory mount. Also found banjo hose fittings for the pressure outlet made by Classic Industries.

Not sure why you would want less volume if you are also using hydroboost.
I used the pump and remote reservoir from a Express van.

The express van pump was specifically recommended to me by my local steering box guru.

Not sure what makes it superior?
