Black Plasti-Dip
Looking at painting my alloy rims graphite color, is it best to use an etch primer before the color then a clear coat?
Going to use either Duplicolor or VHT paint in spray cans.

How many cans of spray paint does it take to do all 5?
I think I went through 3 cans of high build primer and three cans of paint for 4. I probably went overboard, as I usually do, with the coats, but I am three+ coat man for something that will get dinged a lot by rocks and road debris. Mine look stellar after about 8 months of use which included most of a winter in a salt loving area.
No Clear Coat??
Are any / all of you painting the BACK side of the wheels also? Or just the FRONTS?
I have the crappy peeling chrome rims on mine and they are so pitted I cannot re-use them. I bought a set of Lexus wheels that I want to refinish / polish and I'm not sure where to stop. I could polish the complete back side, or I could just have that area blasted and paint it, then polish the fronts. Not sure what order to do that in.
I'm thinking:
Aircraft Paint remover to remove the black crappy paint someone put on them as well as the factory clear coat.
Glass Bead Blast to white finish
Epoxy Etching Primer
Color for the back side and the "pockets" (Graphite)
Polish the fronts to mirror finish
Touch up the "pockets" with color (Graphite)
Clear coat front and back of entire wheel
Color match the center caps to the "pockets" or go accent color.
Or, do I polish the whole wheel front and back to a mirror finish, then clear coat to make it LOOK like chrome. My truck is one of the few with the complete chrome package (and I like it!) black with chrome mirrors, door handles, and some trim.

I just cleaned up the faces. I used wire wheels on my angle grinder and used rough sand paper for the spots I couldn't reach to completely remove the old finish. I went down to bare aluminum and then used brake cleaner to clean prior to spraying. Took about an hour and half per wheel for prep time.
I couldn't give you advice on polishing beyond knowing that you will need to clear coat them if you want to keep the polished look. They will oxidize quickly otherwise.
No, I used the Rustoleum Wheel Paint and it didn't call for a clear coat and I thought the finish was good when I stopped.

Wheel Vintiques Series 12 Painted VHT Satin Black wheel paint, no clearcoat.
Has lasted pretty well, had to touch up a few chips spots over time.

I get my tires rebalanced every time I get them rotated (5K miles) because rock crawling takes chunks out of the tires and changes the balancing. Every time they've had to remove the weights and add different ones or in a different location. For those of you that have painted your wheels, how do you deal with this situation? Or is it you just get them balanced once and done until it's time to replace the tires?
The white wheels are on my truck. They come from 3rd generation 4runners spare wheels. There were 3 different types, so took a little work to get 5 of the same wheels. I have run them with and without spacers, spacers push them out and give it a little more of a bold stance, currently running without them. I ran them with 285/75r16, this picture is with the current tires, 315 75 r16 bfg ta ko2.
Also, just started mocking up hubcap clips on FJ cruiser steelies on my Fj45. I like steel wheels.

I do the same just because I want them to be balanced. I don't do the rock crawling.
I did very little prep with mine. I cleaned the wheels with brake cleaner to get any asphalt off. Washed them with Dawn dish soap (takes away the grease). Rinsed. Dried with the blower. Then sprayed with Rustoleum Professional in the silver can.
Each time I get my tires rotated and they move the weights I respray with a coat or two. Or if I'm being lazy or in a hurry I just spray the weights and where they were.

Thanks!!! Do you happen to know the specs on the 3rd gen 4Runner wheels? 16"x7"? What is the backspacing both with and without the spacers?

I believe they are 16x7 and backspacing of 4.625" the spacers in the picture are 1.5"

So, the effective backspacing is:
Without Spacers: 4.625”
With Spacers: 3.125”
