Anyone know of a source for m4 x .7 oval head phillips machine screw in yellow zinc (16 -20 mm length)? These are for the dash/firewall vent grille. Later versions used a metal clamp and sheet metal style screw but the earlier trucks used a machine screw with a welded backer plate that is tapped with m4 x .7 threads. All 4 of mine broke during removal.

Finding stainless is pretty easy but everything else on the hood / truck hardware wise is new yellow zinc so using stainless for these would make my ocd go INSANE!

McMaster and Grainger are the only places I can think of that'd even come close.

It's worth a call to these folks Reid Products - http://www.reidproducts.com/?page=metric&nav=closed

I know in the off-road industry, everyone goes to them for custom fasteners. They may have something off the shelf that will work, or if your OCD is really that bad, they can build you new ones $$$$$. Prob cheaper to buy something readily available and have it plated to your liking.

Thanks both...my searching has come up with nothing so far. Looks like stainless is my easiest and most realistic choice. We will see how my OCD copes!

I ended up drilling and tapping to m5 as I had some random m5 oval head phillips in my replaced stash. Had to slightly enlarge the grille holes but looks fine and goes with the theme of the truck.

Such a fun build to watch, I'm happy you are able to preserve it and not just paint over all of that character. There are already too many trailer queens out there. I've been looking for a patina project for a while now so I can do exactly what you're doing, albeit with about 10% of the skill and knowledge. Keep up the good work man!

Thanks for the compliment Adam and I’m glad folks enjoy the postings!

Ive been working on a number of random items but not a lot of finished pics to share.

Started cleaning up the square heater duct and it’s four mounting pieces. A PO along the way left it installed when they sprayed the yellow color so it looked pretty bad. I decided to try media blasting it and that actually worked pretty good. The glass bead media left a nice satin finish and then I applied some liquid silicon to restore the black plastic look. Here is a before pic…after pic tomorrow once the mounting pieces dry.

Another PO had ‘retro’ installed a factory roll bar and since the holes are already there and I plan to run a bikini top I decided to reinstall it. It’s not perfect and has a slight bend to it but it works. Pics tomorrow.

Reinstalled the body side door hinge pieces…the top bolts suck btw! Find a small child to help. Haven’t decided whether I run a set of best top half doors or the oem canvas straps. I have a set of NOS straps and associated bits but having a half door is nice. Maybe I do both! To get the half doors in black denim you have to buy a full set as the half ones by themselves only come in the black crush color - shiny vinyl.

Also installEd the tiger/bikini top front windshield channel. I am not a fan of drilling unneeded holes so I made a poster board template of the oem hardtop holes and transferred to the tiger channel. Worked like a charm!

Also got an oem license plate mount blasted which I’ll paint tomorrow. On deck for blasting tomorrow is a replacement parking brake drum I found in my parts stash that fits the driveshafts I plan to use.

Painted the parking brake drum I found as well as license plate mount. Backing plate and guts ready to be mounted.

Also finished the Aisin hubs…these were from an IFS mini truck so I had to replace the inner gears to work with 60 series birf outers.

Started working on wiper motors….these things are nasty on the outside but the guts looked great. It will take me a while using a dremel wire wheel to strip off the yellow paint and dried grease before repainting a grey color.

What are folks using to replace the electrical connection rubber covers? One of mine is serviceable after media blasting but the other one is pretty much garbage. @pardion ?

I have some reproduced that might be avalliable. Can’t get to them for another week. We are evacuated from our home due to a forest fire.’
just hoping the house is still there, let alone 3 Land Cruisers, and a s*** load of parts. Please check back in about a week. John

Thanks for the reply John. Praying you guys make out ok! Be safe.

Started investigating the inner rear wheel rub…and it’s not just a little. Based on what I see and where it’s rubbing I think doing some grind on the wheels is better then the caliper body. Hopefully it’s just a small bit of grinding and then I’m gtg.

Fixed / clearanced one rear wheel. Still need to do the other side. Was surprised how much had to be taken off a 16” rim to fit Monte Carlo disc brakes.

One year later and I have an update! For whatever reason I got a wild hair and decided to do something on the truck this evening.

I spent the last 6 weeks tearing down our front porch, rebuilding it and then doing the same to my parents rear deck at the coast. If you want to see my deck pics (big wood) go here —> Front Deck Redo - https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjA1x3w and Peep’s Deck Redo - https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjA4Wvb Disregard my mom, she is a retired elementary special ED teacher and still talks to everyone like they are her student!

Started small on the truck, vacuuming away the cellar spiders and then installed the hood hinges plus some other hood bits. I also peeked under the hood and was reminded that I really don’t have a lot of work left to finish this.

My goal is to have this finished and drivable for the ONSC Relic Run in 2023…that should be doable, right?!?

Worked on the truck some this evening, it was tropical storm weather outside so I was ‘forced’, lol.

Got the transfer case rear output seal, parking brake parts and rear driveshaft installed. Used new oem Toyota driveshaft bolts and washers with flanged nuts. That parking brake cable clip (circled in red) is a pita to get clamped (I picked up a new one from SOR). The parking brake kit I used required grinding down the shoe ends for the adjuster to fit.

The driveshafts are the 74-78 size pattern and the front output flange of the tcase is the early small size so I need to either swap the flanges of driveshaft or order correct flange for tcase. Need to check my parts stash and see if any of the driveshafts are early size.

Those parking brake shoe kits are terrible! I had the same issues on both the new cable end and grinding shoes.
