Thinking that changing the water pump in my newly acquired FJ62 is anything like changing one in my MGB. Everyone says it's a one to two banana job, but what they failed to mention when they said one day they meant 24 hours! Talk about complete Hell. I'm assuming we did it right though because as soon as it was all back together (minus the fan shroud) I drove it 800+ miles from Tucson back to California. Now I just need to get the 55 and 60 back here!
 
Our club was camping near a trailhead. Camp was set up and we were done driving for the day. We just finished dinner and I had just opened my first beer.

A nice officer came off the trails and needed some air for his tires before he hit the highway. I reached in my 76 FJ40 and started it up and flipped on the air compressor. We aired his tires up and he was happy.

He thanks us but before he left he gave me a ticket for operating my vehicle with an open container. I reminded him that I never got in the vehicle, I just reached in and started it. It did not matter to him since the vehicle was running and I started it and I had control of it.

That cost me $250.00.

I would have contested that citation D'Animal...That's a hot load of bull s***. I think the judge would have let you off

I thought about it. I travel for a business and it would have required that I take time off and rechedule meetings, etc.

Since it did not go against my driving record at all I just payed it.
 
lesson learned (not the first)

The engine runs a lot smoother when you get the plug wires on the right spark plugs--- and it only takes a day and a half to figure it out when you screw up. It only took that long because every time I thought of it, I went "Nah, I'm not that stupid" D'oh.
 
Apparently some lessons I will never learn. My head is bleeding..again...you know that hood catch dodad to the left of your hood latch...well I must of nailed that sucker a dozen times with my head while doing the stem seals last night/this AM. That SOB really f'in hurts everytime I nail it. You'd think I'd just take that sucker off if I am going to be spending some quality time under there. :doh:
 
Yea and make sure you remove the old oil filter gasket when you change the oil and filter.

uuuuuhhhhhh....... you struck a nerve:D I pulled my 350 trying to find the oil leak and it was......... two gaskets:doh: my friends still give me :censor: to this day over it. I am damn fast at pulling and reinstalling the V8's though:beer:

My friends and I ALL have had run ins with my hood catch thing (It's just sooo much funnier when it's not me!)

I read this the first time and thought. "What is he talking about?, I'd never hit my head on that thing." Well untill this weekend replacing the radiator hoses. I must of smacked my head 6 good times, once I had to go iside to see if it was bleeding. Today I can feel a half dozen small bruises on the top of my head. Worst of all is I had a nice pair of sunglass that were on my head. Needless to say they are no good now. That caused me to throw every tool I had within reach into the front yard. Took me an hr to find them all. Damn I was pissed. Why could they have not made that damn rod 4 inches taller. Damn.

You know they have these little rubber animals that you put over faucets so kids don't hut themselves falling on them. I think I might just buy one for that freeking thing and shove it on when I'm working. Or maybe I should just wear a foam helmet.
 
Front fender will not stay on without any bolts, while you are under the car shoving your new rock-slider around.

It really didn't feel so great.
 
Do not use a punch and hammer to remove the plunger plug on the back of a power steering pump on a 60. This is the plunger stop that is held in with a "C" clip. The plug is extremely soft and easily damaged.

Instead, thread a bolt into the bolt hole and work the plug out as intended by the maunfacturer.
 
lesson #66 im going to feel that in the morning

the secound you forget to put your face shield on the grinder kicks back and hits you in the lip :whoops: 10 or so stitches and 2.5 hours in the ER ...good times, staff was awesome but i think ill wait another 25 years before i goto the ER again :censor:

I used to keep oil filters for 3 vehicles on my shelf. I changed one one day and used the wrong filter. The one i used looked similar but was slightly larger diameter. It held good untill I started the vehicle, then is shot out all over. Lucky it was a 4quart 4cylinder.

Since then I always mark the boxes with what vehicle it is for. The best lessons are learned the hard way...
 
hood latch malfunction

play close attention to the hood latch...........driving the 74 pig moderate hiway speed hit a small bump and the hood popped open...no; not all the way:lol: but just enough to catch my attention..have had the hood pop open all the way in other vehicles:eek:

part # 58 kept it from coming all the way open.

part # 57.......hood latch has a 12mmx1.25 thread that screws into the hood itself; mine was rusted to the point that the threads were not holding so the hood latch stayed securely in the hood lock........but the hood was not latched and popped open:eek:
thankfully had not cleared my tools out and had a tap and die set along with a 7/16-20 helicoil!
solution cut 7/16 -20 threads=to 11 mmx 1.25 on the hoodlatch
drill out the hood threads........use 29/64s drill bit
tap in the helicoil,
screw in the hoodlatch with 7/16-20 / or 11x1.25 MM threads
and thankfully had not removed aux hood hook # 58 as I have been tempted to do several times after it dented my head:lol: HTH
