Parts acquired yesterday:

  • 3FE head (rocker assembly, valve cover, head bolts)
  • 3FE Thermostat housing (sensors and stuff attached to it)
  • Complete induction system from air cleaner to intake manifold
  • Exhaust manifolds with down pipes
  • O2 sensors
  • Fuel rail
  • Fuel lines
  • ECU - #89661-60090
  • Fuse box from under the hood
  • Vacuum switching valves
  • Coil/ Ignitor
  • Distributor
  • EFI harness
  • Heater distribution pipes on PS valve cover from 3FE
  • Fuel pump block-off plate

Your list of parts for the underhood stuff looks complete. What are you plans for the fuel pump and fuel lines from the tank to the engine?

Keeping the 60 tank. Going to use an external pump. Will run hard lines, flare the ends, etc.

I've read that swapping a 62 tank is a good idea, but for me tracking one down, paying for it, and storing it really isn't possible. The external pump should do the job. And if it fails I don't have to cut a hole in the floor of the 60 or drop the gas tank.

Thanks for the confirmation on the list of parts btw :)

Alex if you haven't already, consider an in line fuel filter between the gas tank and fuel pump. Before the fuel pump, considering direction of flow.

Yeah. For sure.

Tank --> Fuel Filter --> Fuel Pump --> Fuel Pressure Regulator --> Fuel Rail

I'm not sure on the FJ62/80 fuel line set-up. Is there another filter in there?

Sweet!! I'm subscribed :D

My buddy is building a 2FE for his FJ40 with the MegaSquirt ECU. These motors should produce a lot of power and yield somewhere around 15mpg based on what I've read here.

Sub'd as well.. Would love to do this soon but you think a college student budget is bad, try a gov't workers budget!

Lol. My Dad works for the government. Has for 30 years or so. He works at home :) visits VA Central Office every now and then.

If you recall my 60 was rebuilt in his garage. I miss that garage :crybaby:

Okay back to tech. I showed a LC buddy of mine all the parts and he was amazed.

I love the ol' 2F. It runs great in this "winter" weather we get in Texas. The 2FE will be better though. No more sputtery starts or seafoaming the carb. It'll be sweet.

Picture from a few days ago of all the goodness. The EFI harness is in the bag along with the fuel rail and injectors.

That feeling you get when you have parts for your rig in the back....:D

My version of fuel flow: 60 pickup, 'coarse' filter >> external pump >> FJ62 EFI filter >> rail.

The filter in front of the pump, on the suction side, should be something with very little restriction.
There are some carb- application filters that work well. I mount them so they can't have any air
trapped in them, but that's a holdover from the days of mechanical pumps...

The 60 and 62 tanks aren't any different, are they?

t

Dumb question....why not just install the 3fe?

The 2FE does not require pulling the whole engine, there are potential engine mount modification issues with dropping in a whole 3FE, the 2FE (I believe) provides the advantage of more low end torque and taller piston stroke to name a few off the top of my head.

Thanks t. The tanks are identical in shape, size, and mounting as far as I know.

Because the 2FE is cooler. See below.

This. 2F block has a longer stroke. 3FE head is a better design. So we get the best of two motors. Small compression bump, fuel injection, and I don't have to pull an entire motor.

Plus I just like making things complicated. :wrench:

Great start! I'm subscribed, because at the rate my 2FE build is (not) going, you'll finish long before I do.

Just cause I'm posting doesn't mean I'm working on it. I'm thinking about it. Pretty much non-stop lol.

Very very nice. So have you sourced a spare engine for spares? ;)

Lol. Not yet sir. I prefer to keep spares of parts that I won't be needing. Got too many of those haha. Although you never know..

Is there an extreme difference between the 80 and 62 ECU wiring? Mine has three plugs going into the ECU. All different sizes IIRC.

I downloaded an 80 series chassis and body manual, but it didn't have what I need. Is there a 3FE engine manual that is applied more towards the 80 series? I have one that is like "1988 engine manual" or something. Need your words here beno :)

I don't think it's extreme, but they changed almost everything a little bit. Each plug has a different number of pins than the 62 ECU, the signals aren't all in the same place, and the engine and body harness don't connect the same way. I got excited in the junkyard because there was an intact 80 harness and the plugs looked pretty similar- but on close inspection, it's all subtly different.
So nothing really crosses. I'm going to try using an 80 coil and igniter
(because they're more common in the junkyard) but all the parts are
different- except the distributor!
I dunno how much smarter the 80 ecu is...

From what I saw the engine and body harness really don't connect that much. If at all in the 80. The coil went into the body harness, and of course the under-hood fuse box. I need take a look at that and see what actually will be used. It has like 15+ wires coming out of it.

The main harness which plugs into the ECU goes to all the sensors/valves/injectors/O2 sensors/AFM/yougetthepoint. It's pretty independent.

The coil would only need switched power, just like the fuel pump. Everything else should be good.

Appreciate all the words with this gentlemen. Talking through all this will make the process faster.

I know I'm going slow here, but that's the pace I can handle at the moment. Been working and going to classes and such. Doing well in both. School is pretty boring, but what can you do. lol

I just got the 3FE head into the machine shop today. They will make it like new. Cleaning, valve job, etc. Also asked them to tap and plug the galley plug. All of that for $185. The head went to Texon Motors here in Houston. Got a recommendation from two club members that they do good work. I like that.

Before shots of the head:

Nothing else is really new. The 60 being my only vehicle pretty much prohibits me from taking it down for too long. I will graduate this December, and then I'll get a second vehicle. I will have this done before the end of 2015 I promise :D

I'm tired of changing mechanical fuel pumps... Therefore I will have this done haha
