Well... not much has been happening on the 45 in the past few months, but... the site that hosts all my pics changed a bit and all the URL's were wrong. So the benefit of nice big pictures hosted on another website is great, but once it goes bad it's bad. I've spent hours re-linking just this thread alone. I have quite a few other threads to redo but that will have to be some other time.

As for the 45 I did finally go pick up the seat belts I had my upholstery buddy re-web. Here's what I started with:

They're out of an early 70's FJ40 and the lengths were a little off and the webbing was tired so I measured what sizes I wanted them to be and had them re-webbed custom lengths.

This is how they came back with the correct length webbing:

So I popped the covers off:

Cleaned them all up and sanded the covers:

Then primed them and used a black satin finish:

The only thing I didn't do that I considered (and still might do) is have them remove these old tags and sew them on the new belts:

I mentioned to Shane that he might want to consider scanning these, digitally cleaning them up and making reproduction cloth with the correct date stamp for whatever people here might want. Not sure if there's much demand and it is a bit overkill but that's never stopped anyone here before.

I'm going to bolt these in tomorrow. I had the drivers side lengthened a bit and made the passenger side long enough to fit a middle passenger in a pinch.

Side mirror reinforcement piece? Ok, I'm gonna ask a newbie question here but I've never seen that piece before. Does it go inside the body where the mirror mounts? Or do the 2 tabs for the mirror sit inside that reinforcement piece? Please and thank you. Sorry for the dumb question but I fixed the mirror on my shorty and never saw that piece or if I did I don't remember seeing it. Looks great!

Goes between the body and the mirror bracket. It just has holes for the bolts to go through. I don't think SOR lists them. Last time I was there the counter guy had no idea what I was talking about but Marv new exactly what and where they were.

You can see it mounted here on my rig.

Dom,

Did Whitey ever get a hold of you about the letter and number desigantion on your truck?

The seat belts look great!

Nope. Haven't heard a thing. In fact he said he was going to give me a complete PTO winch setup for my rig for posting those pics of the 45 for sale and...

nothing.

:flipoff2:

On a side note: I finally got the courage to contact the widow of the previous, previous owner after tracking them down on Facebook... :o

She had only been married to him for a few years so they didn't know anything about the truck but said he was a crazy old guy that lived off the grid for MANY years in the Trinity National Forest. They said the truck looked like something he would drive. She passed on several contact numbers of close friends of his.

Now I have to gather the courage to call complete strangers about this truck.

I smell a historical journey drive with the 45 to the Trinity National Forest...

Niiice!!

I like the idea of putting the tag on the new belt...looks great!

Dom, the winch is on the way...thanks for posting, maybe someday I will figure out how to do it:doh: Anyway I dug out an old movie called bless the beast and the beauty circa 1971 and remembered 2 0r 3 short wheelbase removable hardtops used in the film.In one seen the truck pulls up and for a split second you can barely see 3 numbers,EXACTLY where yours are!!!I paused it and it is indeed a letter followed by a 2 digit number.I thought I found your truck but they didnt match, but there was another white 45 in a parking lot!SO do we have a former movie star,??What could that number designate?WAs it a hollywood thing back then to keep track of vehicles,2 of the trucks were seen quite a bit at the end of the movie..good stuff,I stripped the primer off my new shorty and found old texaco emblems on the doors, that were painted on! I pictured the truck parked out in the oil fields in the 60's,or maybe a gas station svc vehicle! It is alot of fun to try and figure out the history...Trinity forest road trip!!! Is it in northern california in my neck of the woods!

I have not been doing too much with the Cruisers lately but decided to tackle the front pulley problem that reared it's ugly head again a month or two ago. It's been parked for some time since I noticed the pulley had come loose and I was afraid to drive it much. Just a few trips to Home Depot for supplies to build a fence and other than that it's been in the driveway.

So I decide to solve the front pulley loosening problem with a more permanent solution (I hope). The front of the crank must be worn because both of the pulleys I've tried have come loose. (See post #149 for the last episode)

So I drained the coolant and disconnected all the front wiring, removed the bib, took out the radiator, etc. so I could get to the front of the crankshaft. I purchased an SBC harmonic balancer bolt at my local speed shop (7/16 x 20) with plans to drill and tap the crankshaft to eliminate the pressed-on design that keeps loosening up...

IMG_4365.jpg

I lined up the drill as best as I could and started out with a small bit gradually getting larger and larger. I used the angle drill because my corded drill was too long to clear the front cross member, and the weaker drill kept me from creating some unwanted carnage. Patience...

IMG_4364.jpg

Once the hole was drilled to the proper spec I used the tap and slowly threaded the crank...

IMG_4367.jpg

While I had the radiator support out I re-welded a bolt on one side as it had snapped off during the last pulley replacement. I ground off the old broken bolt, found an exact replica and good to go...

IMG_4362.jpg

I had dropped off the original pulley I had replaced with the one from Marv at the machine shop and had the front of it machined down flat. You can see the difference here...

IMG_4368.jpg

I lined up the keyway, slid it on snugly and bolted it on.

Here's the pulley bolted and loctite'd in place...

IMG_4369.jpg

Put it all back together and test drove without issue. I hope this one lasts longer than the last one...

Bravo, you've got some balls my friend. Glad you didn't slip with the drill!

Looking at those pictures again, how long did it take to drill it out without a battery in the drill? :flipoff2:

Not really. Thanks for reminding me...

I've been talking to Brett about making some big changes but it's all talk at this point. I am going to put a disc brake conversion at the front of the list. I'm on the lookout for mini-truck parts and a 69+ axle to do the swap.

Considering the 2F EFI and 4 speed split case conversion...

oh s***, be careful talking to brett about things, I did back in 2003 and now I have 4 cruisers. :)

j/k, that would be sweet with the 2f, 4spd and mini truck front end, let me know if you need help on the front disc swap, I have done several.
