Mine too. So having a donor combo meter handy, I decided (finally) to fix it.

You have to pull the center light assy:

You need two hands for this one. Grab all three tabs on the back with the fingers of one hand and push the assy, from the front, using the other hand, until it pops out of the back.

DO NOT remove the facing; it's not supposed to come off and you will break the retainer pinheads (mine flew across the room; somebody'll find it eventually). I did it so you don't have to. Here's what's behind the curtain:

I stole the "L" light bulb, because it's never used and always a ready replacement. If you want the light, or just want the part number, it's 90072-02005.

@Photoman has the rest of the combo meter lights covered, for us Luddites who haven't converted to the LED true religion.

Dash Light bulb question

I'm half-in, half-out of the water on this. I did replace the overheads; worth every penny. I can read by them in the daytime!

You are the first, or not so much: No "D" Club

Guessing you don't wheel, I use L often, bunch of times yesterday. Not that I care about the light.

Pretty common the 'D' not lighting up, some customers leave it some want it working.

My manual version has a blanking plate in place, I removed it and used it for extra warning lights.

Once you have had the dashboard out a few times, you can do it without thinking and takes less than ten minutes.

When I did mine, I found that there was a bulb in every hole, but not all of them are used. The topmost location is blacked out entirely. I think it's used on some non-US models. On mine, the topmost bulb even had a green cover on it. The bottom location reads 'MANU', and I have no idea what that would be for.

Your right there are variations, mine as you can see hold 7 bulbs, some 6 to suit different transmissions.

Mine is burned out but I'm too lazy to dig off in there for the one bulb. Some day I may convince myself that it will be worth it to put in LEDs.

I feel like I'm the only one with whose light still works. I'd say it was replaced, but the PO was lucky to change oil.

Maybe he was driving around with Tools in low.

The top bulb with the green cover is a backlight for the gear selector.

A few years ago I heard someone getting their D light back on by hitting the top of the dash with their hand. I tried it, and it worked!

You say that like it's something bad? Driving in L gets us to some really cool places.

Man that's a great idea! And I came in here thinking great another D thread, but now I have another project, which is good and bad

My D still lights up because I had someone change all the bulbs right when I got it. I wish now that I had paid for LED's (if they existed 10 years ago) because that would have likely been a lifetime solution.

I need to go through and replace all the bulbs in my cars with LED so the kids can stop killing good batteries.

I shift my automatic transmission manually so the other lights get a fair amount of run time.

My "D" light worked when I bought my rig. Then, it stopped working. Then it started again. It's been working consistently for 4 months now. My take: The Landcruiser was build so well it can heal itself!

I have my D light working it stopped for a long time then I did the swap and it like @Lumpskie said healed or it realizes it now has a diesel and that is why it lite up :moon:

My D light has been out for 10+ years, probably more. I read the above quote and just yesterday gave the dash a sharp whack right above the speedo. Whaddya know, I've got a lit D light! Thanks!
