Is your "D" (instrument panel ) light out?

My D light has been out for 10+ years, probably more. I read the above quote and just yesterday gave the dash a sharp whack right above the speedo. Whaddya know, I've got a lit D light! Thanks!

WHOA!?!?!?!?!? Ok, new high priority project for the night!

I guess 1/3 of the lights on my center console/dash is out; part of the A/C lighting. Hit the console in the right spot and the center console lights up fully. I hate pulling the center dash and having to put it back together.

DO NOT remove the facing; it's not supposed to come off and you will break the retainer pinheads (mine flew across the room; somebody'll find it eventually). I did it so you don't have to. Here's what's behind the curtain:

I stole the "L" light bulb, because it's never used and always a ready replacement. If you want the light, or just want the part number, it's 90072-02005.

What tool are you using to get these plastic bulb bits on and off? I used a screwdriver and it marred the plastic readily with any use of force. It was easy to get off, but getting it to tighten down again... I wish I had the right tool for the job.

Thanks!

P.S. In case anyone wants a new transmission indicator assembly above, it's 81860-60080

I used a screwdriver; if there's a specific tool for these housings, I haven't seen it.

For posterity, here’s what the back of my cluster looks like from a 1997 US factory locked 80.

FYI, if you order a new transmission indicator assembly, it comes with all the bulbs preinstalled. The plastic is pretty brittle and I ended up chipping off a piece trying to pry it out.

Pricey part compared to the bulbs that just need to be swapped out. I'm considering fixing my D at some point and at that price I'll probably give it a go before spending the extra cash to replace the who assembly. Guess if I fudge it up bad enough I'll bite on that..

My og plan was to simply swap out the tiny bulbs, but you can see in the pic where I snapped off one of the three latches. It'd still work fine, but I'm OCD about my 80. I also noticed while waiting for the indicator assembly that my N bulb would work *intermittently* which bugged me to no end (pre-latch). I probably dug into the dash 3-4 times swapping bulbs. I def made a mess of this simple job. smh

As for anyone else doing this, I'd stay away from using a screwdriver on those soft plastic bulb housings. I'd just use a rubbery/grippy glove to apply some gentle phalanges muscle power to twist on/off.

Now it's all sorted with the new assembly, every bulb replaced in the icluster with new oem bulbs to retain that warm vintage glow + good to go for another 24 years. Onto the next one. :)

I just saw my N light illuminate the other night and welcomed it back home.
