Yeah it's cheap insurance for keeping the upper plenum oil free

I have to clean mine quite often.
I would say every gas tank refill is best but every two is a must.
It is a lot of maintenance!
Is this normal?

My home depot special started to leak after about almost 2 years now I replaced it with a cheap metal catch that I got online
So cheap I had to make my own type of baffle for it, oh well
I will post pics later

Roger....where did your separator start to leak?

From the BS hole on the bottom
And the plastic bowl was getting all cracked
And the plastic where the filter screws into started falling apart and I had to rig it up a couple of times.
I think that a combination of the oil and heat started to break down the plastic inside because it was really fragile
Not like when it was new.
I got my $20 worth out of it.
I think over time the oil and heat has been breaking the thing down
These things are really air/water seperators not oil catch cans

Very good point about the intended use of these separators. However, the fact you got almost 2 years out of yours and only cost $20 is a pretty good deal.

Do you have pictures of the damaged unit?

The separator in my cobra started to fall a part as well. I think mainly because it is exposed to more heat ( les room in the engine bay to route it away) so I'll prolly put a new one on today. I empty the one in my 80 about every 2 fill ups and the one in the cobra every 2-3

NLXTACY...that is a nice separator, and I agree it will be a good solution for the longevity of the unit.

Be careful with what can you get

I bought a cheapo aluminum one of amazon for like $30

It had no baffle inside it so basically you will still suck oil into the intake or at least the inlet tube extends far enough down into the can to seperate the inlet and the outlet

I had to rig up my own baffle type deal in it, not a big deal but it was a pain.

Hmm, I only clean mine out when it gets to about half-full, which is usually after about 2500 miles, or 10+ tanks of fuel. It seems to be collecting less than when I first installed it. Did a 500 mile run last week in the truck up and back to Tahoe, so high-speed on the highway, plus altitude and climbing, and only 1/8" at the bottom after that trip.

Mine is also holding up very well, it is the Jegs version, and no cracks or discoloration. I have the TRD charger in there too, so the underhood temps can get pretty hot.

Most of you probably know this... and I remembered JUST AFTER pulling my car in for smog...

It will not pass visual in CA with the separator installed...

Also, if you have the slee washer bottle relocation plate for a dual battery setup... make sure your SMOG plug under the hood is EASILY accessible :D

correct. it does need to be removed before the smog check, and put back on after you pass

I bought a Home Depot mini air/oil separator couple of days and the bowl has a nice drain petcock on it. No more separating the bowl from the unit, just turn the knob and drain it. Make sure you attach a drain hose first!

Nice deal! Any pics or it in place?

I really like the Lowes Kobalt unit with the exception of the drain mechanism is not the greatest, hence the allen plug.

What is a petcock?

At the bottom of the JEG there is a drain screw. But I am reluctant to open it and drain on the motor. And I don't see how to attach a hose to it
