installed a oil seperator on my 80

Either way, i'm glad it's not in my intake manifold;)

So after a few hundred miles this is what the oil looks like in the catch, to me it looks like water is mixing in there. From others pics this is not what I should be seeing. Maybe air is leaking in through the drain but wouldent that settle out? This has been sitting for over 24 hours when the pic was taken. I plan on pulling it and sealing the drain better. Oil is Mobil-1 synthetic 5w30 SUV with about 2K miles on it, looks fine on the dipstick. Any thoughts would be appreciated:cheers:

I was a fellow CT dude, lived there for 28 years.
It is still cold up there.
It is condesation, when it gets warm out I bet that it will not look like that.
When it is cold out I sometimes get crap like that in my catch can.
Its all good just keep an eye on it.

Seperator installed.

Spliced the JEGs oil seperator in and secured with liner clamps. I plan on fabbing a bracket and repositioning the filter with replacement hoses.

Looks good mane

I sliced my new factory hose and reused it. Fits nicely.

Parts I used.
Kobalt 1/4" Mini Air Filter p/n221024 (79686-00169) $12.68
2x 3/8 Bard 1/4" MIP Hose Barb Adapter p/n27970 (48643-07449) $2.44 each
2pack #4 hose clamp p/n/62508 (35119-07404) $1.04

For those looking to use this setup, a tip: the filter mentioned above is found at Lowe's in the air compressor area of the tool section. The brass adapters and clamps are in the plumbing section.

Don't waste time looking for them amongst the numerous other adaptors in the air compressor section!

few questions that I have been wondering about ever since I installed this; is there any maintenance that can be done to that filter inside the glass? Like cleaning it? Or if not then how often one should replace the whole thing with a new one i.e every 10K miles or more? Once that filter gets really dark over time, some oil must make it through into the intake right?

Just wondering....

im sure some does. id be curious to see how much oil would gather in a second seperator.
one in line with another.

I don't look at it as a "filter" per say, but more of a catch can. I wouldn't stress over it. Just dump it every so often so it doesn't over fill and your good to go.

One month report

I installed a generic fuel filter on the larger vacuum hose a few days after installing the Lowe's separator to see what it would catch.
After 330 miles the Lowe's separator is about a quarter full and the fuel filter has literally just a drip of oil in it. The pressure in the larger line is so much lower its probably not worth installing a catch on.

Did somebody say "pimp"?...

shouldnt the PCV vent be pre supercharger on the vacuum side of the intake air track? otherwise it is seeing positive pressure and not venting like it should right?

The PCV hose is plumbed in the TRD setup in the same fashion as non-S/C rigs. No changes per Mr. T. IIRC one of the jobs of the PCV valve is to prevent any pressure going back into the crankcase, as it is a one-way valve. Most of the time the rig is not under boost, at least with $4+ a gallon fuel prices.

hows everyone elses holding up so far. i empty mine after every fill up. and its about 1/3 of the way full each time

I have emptied mine about once a month since I have installed mine. It seems to be working like advertised.

Hey guys...just wanted to bring a point to light regarding those who have installed and are using the Kobalt brand separator.

When I went to empty mine I found that the plastic reservoir was fused to the aluminum hosing. Rather than destroy it, in attempt to remove it, I took the entire unit off, including the hoses as one piece. Then by removing the intake brass fitting, I was able to drain the the reservoir of its dirty crud.

I went ahead and picked up another Kobalt separator fro Lowes the other day, prior to draining the reservoir this afternoon. When looking at the new unit, I read that it is only rated to 125*F...of course there in lies the problem. Things can get a bit warmer than that under the hoods and that close to the head.

I am toying with a new way of draining it with out having to remove the plastic reservoir and will report back with details.

Guess it's a good thing I never installed the Kobalt separator I bought last year.

Ha! In the instructions from the Kobalt separator (I opened the large one at Lowe's today), It says that Sears motor oil is not compatible with the polycarbonate bowl. Kinda funny! Wonder how long these bowls will last with oil, gas, and heat?

should be fine. mines holding up no problems

I have emptied my kobalt branded one with the plastic jar several times, never had it stuck.
